Using the import tool – automating import file folder hierarchy, naming of folders, files

Post by Henry-In-Florida »

I have several newbie type advanced questions to replicate my workflow in Lightroom import toll to PSu (Photo Supreme V4). Can you give me some suggestions on ways to find detailed information on these issues and/or suggestions? I would like to begin using and experimenting with PSu in the hopes of making it my preferred DAM engine and speeding my importing and cataloging of media from camera media to storage and processing. How can the import hierarchy be automated when importing files from media (CF, SD cards)? Sorry for the long list. My first post was lost in your system so I took the opportunity to add to my first unseen post with a long list, some of which occurred to me later on.
  1. How can I set up a specific hierarchy of folders to store and import my camera media. Normal workflow is to sneaker-net the media to my card reader and import it to a library (I use multiple Libraries depending on the job being done). In Lightroom6 my workflow is to name folders by date of capture: Folders/RAID Storage Volume/USER/*PROJECTNAME> YYYY>YYYY-MM-DD>YYMMDD-xx_filename text_subject. Please, can you give me a step-by-step procedure to set this as defector installation for each library of media stored?
  2. How can I display the sorting of the files by capture date and set that as the standard display setting in Folder view or all views?
  3. Is metadata (XMP file) merging to a RAW file possible after import? What about at the time of ingest? Many of my files were haphazardly merged to .CR2 containing XMP while other .CR2 files contain separate files. Can they be combined on the original media within PSu? Is this a good idea? Why or why not?
  4. Can different sources use different import techniques, e.g., importing from previous similar organization? I believe that I was able to import existing file configurations from my media files to mimic the same pattern from my LR libraries. What if I want to change that up? Can I reorganize my media files AND my storage format of the PSu library in one operation (script)? What about scripting generally, is there a Primer?
  5. I see that importing .DNG files are supported. Can RAW files be converted within PSu on import? Must it be done separately using Adobe Raw Converter tool? I'm pretty much over .DNG but curious.
  6. Can the original files from my library (once properly loaded in) be exported as JPEG's as specific formats (xx pixels HxW) from within PSu? Again a specific step-by-step instruction or document would be helpful.
  7. It concerns me that as the app is enhanced there is no documentation of operational changes. If there is such, where is it?
Thanks!!!

1. Choose Hamburger menu.
Choose Import to catalog
Enable Copy
Enable Import
Click More settings and under Subfolder and File name you are able to chose a preset or custom build upon a preset or customize your own set.

2. In the Top Right theres a View menu.
Click it and set Sorting to Photo date. It will be remembered.

3. You can specify PS to create a separate sidecar XMP file and not to write it into the RAW.
Either automatically or by command.

4. You can do a lot by script in PS. But I'll pass for someone else to answer this one.

5. I have not seen anything like that.

6. Yes you can export and share them pretty as you like.
Select the photos and click the Share in the bottom menu. Setup and config it as you like.
Don't get lost. Be methodic and take it step by step because there's a lot of things to setup, script and automate.
But gosh what a powerful application this is.

First page. Under Support.

Also from within the application.
Hamburger menu, Help, Whats new in...

5. For converting Raw to DNG, in Import>Copy Settings>Scripting select "Use a file copy script" and select DNGCopyHandler. This will call Adobe DNG converter as part of the import process, so you can do everything within PSU.
