Hi Damien, A warm welcome to the forum.

First things to try:
1. Always update to the latest build; Currently that is 2821; https://www.idimager.com/what-s-new-in-photo-supreme-v5
2. Close all open tabs and restart the software
3. Select Tools -> Build missing thumbnails and previews from the hamburger menu and let it finish
4. Compact the catalog (Catalog -> Compact from the upper left corner hamburger menu)

If it is still slow then perhaps you can explain what part is slow.

Performance

Post by HAL_8500 »

Hello PSU Forum:
I am in the testing phase of Photo Supreme and I am impressed by the breadth and depth of the functionality. I really like that, plus the possibility of scripting for more complex tasks.

At the moment, I struggle with two things: Documentation and Performance.

a) I like the fact that there are short PDFs that explain specific areas of the product. But I cannot search across the PDFs easily. For instance, I am trying to find out what the difference is between preview and thumbnail, so I looked for both keywords in all PDFs. This is cumbersome. A single document might be more handy. And I still do not know the difference between thumbnail and preview. Maybe I am missing a resource?

b) The reason, why I want to know the difference is that I have performance issues. When scrolling through the thumbnails, it takes a few seconds for every page to refresh the view. The colored tiles look nice, too, but I would expect the thumbnails to be there instantaneously, as is the case in Apple's photo app as well as Media Pro (with exactly the same images from the same source). The catalog database that I run my tests with has 24,719 images and is 1.6 GByte in size. The software runs on an iMac 5k with 24 GByte RAM. The image files are on an external USB-C hard disk. The image preview is set to 3200 pixels, but I do not know what that means or if reducing this would increase performance. Interestingly enough, the catalog tab in the preferences says "thumbs.db not found", although I can see it in the file system and the date is updated, when I compact the thumbnails database (which takes a few hours).

Any advice for a better performance experience is appreciated.

All the best for everyone and stay healthy!

Again, a warm welcome to the forum.

a) You can print them all and read them as a book. Keep the sequence of the menu as each quick manual can be considered a chapter in the book.
Or merge them together into one PDF, there are different PDF tools that allow you to do that. Someone once posted a merged PDF but it got outdated quickly because the manuals are updated regularly.

b) Did you let PSU build all thumbnails (Tools -> Build Missing Thumbs and Previews)?
Are you also using the latest build; currently build 2827
Keep the thumb zoom factor at 100%

Thumbnails are the small images that are displayed in the "tabbed" area in the centre (to right) of the screen.
Previews are the images displayed when you select a Thumbnail and either doubleclick it or click the "Preview" button lower right.
Performance in terms of speed does seem to vary on a lot of factors, I too would prefer a faster presentation at times :-)

The preview is also used in Quick View (press space bar on thumb)

I imagine that a better performance experience would result from finding out why the thumbs.db is not found, and making alterations so that it is found. Unfortunately I can't help with this, but I hope Hert can.

Thank you for your responses. I do feel welcomed. :D

With regards to the preview: I like the Quick View feature, I had not found this before. It shows a version of the image that is larger than the 100% thumbnail, but much smaller than the actual file. This may be the preview.
When I either double-click the thumbnail or click the "Preview" button as Geoff suggested, I think is see the actual file. There is a little "click" after a split second, but I thought that this is when the color management kicks in. But maybe I am wrong and I see the high-resolution preview and the little "click" is when PSU is done loading the actual file. Can someone tell me?

Also. does someone know, if having smaller previews would improve performance? I assume the 3,200 pixels setting is based on my high dpi display and that this defines the number of pixels on the longer side of the image. But I am just guessing. Does someone know?

More importantly, I agree with Jim's suggestion that the fact that PSU cannot find the thumbnail database (according to the catalog pane in the preferences) may be a big impact. I am using build 2827 and I not only compacted the catalog and thumbnails databases, but also rebuilt any missing thumbnails and preview ("0 found"). Zoom factor is 100%. I am counting on Hert. :)

Thank you for your input.

By default, the Viewer displays the preview first while loading the full size image from file in the background. That is the click you see. There is an option in the viewer to allow loading full size image or not. If you don't want PSU to load the full size image, then switch that off. Click Options below the viewer.

Smaller previews could increate thumbnail building (which is a one time operation), but won't impact scrolling. But...if the thumb image on-screen is larger than 320px (unscaled) then PSU will load the preview to display the thumbnail. And that has a massive slow down effect. Try lowing the thumbnail zoom scale in small steps. Then press Cmd+R (Ctrl+R on Windows) to refresh the active collection, meaning thumbs will be reloaded from the database. Check if there's a performance gain.

Thank you Hert. This is a very good hint. Indeed, with a 100% zoom the thumbnails have ~361 pixels on the longer side and when I change the zoom to e.g. 75% the thumbnails are ~306 pixels. The performance is much better with the smaller thumbnails. However, scrolling through a few pages e.g. using a mouse's wheel is still not smooth or en par with Media Pro or the Apple Photo App or Graphic Converter's Browser (once it is done building up thumbnails in its cache). I think there is room for improvement.

Also, on my 5k display, the thumbnails are quite small at 75% then and unfortunately also the thumb info font size scales down, which makes it hard to read.

Do you have a suggestion with regards to the "thumbs.db not found" issue mentioned above?

Apparently you're using a screen resolution that exceeds the standard settings (all tested on 4K, not 5K). To support that, in the next update, the thumbs will be stored at 480px instead of 320. You should then rebuild the thumbs (Cmd+Opt+T on selected files).
The thumb.db file not found is an issue of the preferences panel. It checks the wrong file on macOS, hence the message. That doesn't impact anything.

Can you try this in build 2834 which was just released. Does that bring improvement?
Thank you

I have a couple of questions in regards to this discussion.
1) How can you tell the size of the thumbnails displayed. I can't see this anywhere.
2) It looks like the build as of 4 days ago is 2834. My current version is 2710, but when I check for updates, it tells me I'm current.

1) Grab a screenshot and use a pixel editor to check the size of the thumbnail.
2) Not every update receives a "web update trigger". Typical frequency for a webupdate trigger is once every two weeks, or when an important fix or change is made.

I find lots of uses for "Coolruler" for measuring pixels https://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-E ... uler.shtml
