Import freezes PSU

Post by captainhunt »

I am importing ~100 jpg pictures located in 3 local subfolders into an empty catalog, using Import to catalog. When Synchronization service appears, PSU freezes. After restarting the pictures are there, but unsynchronized, and appear in the timeline under 1899.So I trigger the sync with cmd-s, but rereading meta data from file does not help for the timeline. only when I rewrite the dates to the files the timeline is corrected.
I can repeat this with the same or different pictures the sync goes up to different percentage but in 90% of all cases PSU freezes. No other process is running on the laptop.

BR,
Gergoe

PS: Running latest PSU ver 4.3.1.1784, on Mojave.
PPS: The same happened with Import from folder, or Verify folder

Can you narrow it down to one particular file? How you describe it there's some corruption in your file's metadata that chokes PSU

Cmd-S is Save metadata to file. Keep in mind that you that saved metadata to the file.

You should use Cmd-Opt-S.

I dont think it is due to a particular file. I played with this issue, but it is hard to find the root cause. n particular I cannot nail it down to a single file. E.g. I have a local directory of 33 files, that fails often but always at a different file. I can import the files one by one without any problem. But if I import the whole directory it fails. Then I remove and import again, it runs through, I do it once again, it fails.
In general it seems to happen only when working on at least a few dozens of files.
It is always the Syncronization service that shows up in the activity window, but showing different file names when freezing.
The freeze happens with all kind of jpgs, ones labeled with PSU already, or others fresh exported jpgs from CaptureOne 11 or 12.
I am also not sure whether it is related to import or more to the syncronization process, because when I renamed a directory in finder, and ran a verify folder, and the syncronization process was running a while, it froze again.

I am having a similar issue: Image import stops at 90%, and several files are listed as Out of Sync.

My story is:
Using PS build 4.3.1.1809 (64bit), Windows 10, Single User Edition. System has 32GB of RAM.

I have imported several different times, under different conditions such as, from local disk to same local disk, or from a network share to local disk. Have imported various numbers and sizes of files, generally all .jpg, but also RAWs of various formats.

I perform Import to Catalog from the hamburger menu. I choose both Copy Images to New location, as well as Import Images into Catalog, and have adjusted a few of the settings to suit my preferences. What I usually end up with is that all files are copied as desired, all images are registered as Imported, but approximately 30% are also registered as Out of Sync, and I believe it has to do with the fact that the Import process never reaches 100%, but stops at 90%.

The majority of the time, following the import wizard running for a long time, all the files are copied, then the Image import stops at 90%, and (looking at Windows Task Manager) all CPU activity stops. It looks like the import is probably finished successfully. However the Activity process sits at 90% and never moves again. Even leaving the system for 3 or 4 hours, it never moves again. What I notice when examining Windows Task Manager is that the Memory used remains high (6GB to 8GB RAM during the active import), but when everything looks done - nothing is happening in Photo Supreme Activity window, and CPU usage for the iDimagerSU.exe process remains at 0%, the memory is not released, and sits around 6GB in use.

My last import last night was approximately 11,000 files. After CPU activity stopped, I was left with 11029 files with State of In Last Import, and over 4000 files with State of Out of Sync.

To resolve this, I usually shut down Photo Supreme (to get the Memory free) and then launch it again. Then, from the hamburger menu, I select Tool > Save Metadata to File for all Out-of-Sync Images. That kicks off the Activity window showing the Save Metadata to File for all Out-of-Sync Images activity, and then bouncing in one Synchronize Service at a time.

I an unable to find rhyme or reason to which images end up in Out of Sync during the Import. And typically, after invoking the Save Metadata to File for all Out-of-Sync Images, nearly all the files in Out of Sync are synchronized successfully.

The rhyme why these images are out of sync is because the import process was terminated before PSU was able to read the metadata to the catalog for these files. Once terminated, you’ll have to manually read metadata as explained above. Easiest way to recognize images that are not imported yet is by checking if they are filed in the timeline under 1899 (the zero date in PSU). Imported images always have a date and so won’t be filed in 1899

If you are left with images out of sync after a cancelled import (or in your case a stalled/killed, then;

1. Check if there’s an 1899 date in Timeline
2. Select these thumbs
3. Right click on a selected thumb and select Metadata-Read metadata from file

That will import the data from the file to the catalog...and then they are in-sync. Once you make changes in the catalog, only then you’d write metadata from the catalog to the file.

Unrelated to import freeze but I found two thumbs with 1899-12 date in Timeline; I right clicked & read the metadata from file successfully; the two thumbs disappeared from the view but the Timeline tree still showed 1899-12(2) until I switched tabs, then back again. Refresh F5 didn't help. Report in Mantis?

If you think it's important that this doesn't disappear in the forum's "dark ages" then best to report in Mantis.

I think it's minor but I have plenty of similar Mantis reports that have never been acted upon other than "assigned to administrator". For example viewtopic.php?f=57&t=26717&f=57&t=26717. So I tend to not bother anymore.

Hi Hert,

Thanks for the tip. I did finally realize that was the reason for so many out of sync. Now, if I can only figure out why it sometimes only gets to 90% complete and never finishes. As I said, I have sometimes let the computer sit for 4 or more hours and it never moves past 90%, thus, just terminating it by clicking on the little "X" beside the Activity. Then, just yesterday after writing this post, I imported 6000 images without any problem, and it completed at 100%.
I am really enjoying the app. Been exploring and testing for about 2 weeks now.
