Photo Supreme star ratings in DxO Optics Pro

Post by Stubb »

I'm having a terrible time trying to get DxO to pick up star rating changes made in Photo Supreme. I've looked at the files with Exiftool, and Photo Supreme seems to be doing the right thing, but I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this problem or has a solution.

Have you tried the reverse? Do star ratings in DxO, and then inspect the files with Exiftool, or then see if Photo Supreme can pick up those star ratings.

I also use DxO with PSU.
The 'problem' is that DxO writes DxO star ratings only to its .dop file (a text file - the stars are recorded as "Rank = n" where n is a number), and PSU doesn't attempt to read them. DxO does read and display star ratings from the image metadata (shown as yellow stars, rather than DxO's white stars) - but is strictly read-only.
The 'solution' is to use only one product - PSU - to apply metadata to images, including star ratings. Of course that may leave you with a lot of manual conversion to do...

That's the idea—add all the metadata, including star ratings, in PSU.

Have you run into trouble with DxO not picking up changes in star ratings set in PSU?

As long as they're correctly embedded in the metadata by PSU (they are), it doesn't bother me whether or not DxO picks up star ratings correctly, so I've never run a proper check - though I don't recall seeing an obvious problem.
However I process most images in DxO before I rate them in PSU, so there are often no star ratings when I see them in DxO anyway.

Bumping this again.

I really would like to see PSu to parse the .dop for Star rating/Rank and Pick/Reject
so one could simply do a rating update of files again and have PSu to pick up the tagging.
With an option to keep or update PSus rating if it differs from the imported one.

I haven't tested whether the recent version update to DxO rescans files for changes to star ratings. Previously, DxO only read the rating the first time it saw the file.

Photo software should store ratings in industry standard ways and not use their own invented proprietary ways. That is what standards are for.
Writing their proprietary editing parameters to a proprietary format is one thing, but writing industry standard fields in proprietary formats is a major no-go.

Push DXO to comply with industry standards for ratings. Asking other vendors to comply with DXO's odd choices is the world upside down.
