Hi,
I've recently been importing more iPhone 5s photos and videos to PS, and realized recently that after download, the "Date Created" has been rewritten as the date the import was conducted. Oddly, my import profile includes a renaming recipe with "YYMMDD" as a prefix, and this is correctly written to the true "Date Created." (Although this doesn't seem to be the case with my older iPhone 3g, where the prefix date is also written as the date the import happened).
My workflow is:
1. Plug in iPhone
2. Use ImageCapture to download photos to a temporary folder.
3. Use PS to import the images from the temp folder.
All the dates are correct in the temp folder, but during the import to PS process they seem to be lost.
Any thoughts or suggested workflows to alleviate this would be appreciated!

Date Created in Mac Finder vs PSU-Info Panel
Re: Loss of metadata when importing iPhone images
iPhone photos are no different than other photos and are not treated any different (im an iPhone user myself). iPhone photos have complete metadata in them. If you don't have any metadata then ask I would double check if the images in your temp folder have them or not. You can use ExifTool for that.

Re: Loss of metadata when importing iPhone images
Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, the images in the temp folder do, indeed, have metadata (this is what I meant when in my previous post I mentioned that the dates were correct in the temp folder). It's only when I use the PS Importer that it appears the dates are reset somewhere in the metadata. Oddly, when I view the "Info" of the image in PS the dates show correctly, but when I look in finder, the "Date Created" and "Date Modified" fields show the date that I did the import. Why would PS be showing a correct date but the Finder be showing a different date for the exact same image in the same subfolder?
Re: Loss of metadata when importing iPhone images
Maybe you're confusing the date/time created from metadata with the date/time created of the file on the files system? Even so with date modified.

Re: Loss of metadata when importing iPhone images
Hmmmm...not sure I follow. Here's a question that might help me understand if we're on the same page. If I use the Info tool to look at an image in the PS catalog, and the date says "2013:08:06 14:06:30" shouldn't the "Date Created" field in Finder also show that same date for this file? Currently, it does not. So, is the "Date" field that is used by PS taken from somewhere different than the "Date Created" field that Finder uses?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Loss of metadata when importing iPhone images
The Finder is showing you the properties of the file. It shows you when the file was created on the file system. PSU shows you metadata from the file's Exif/XMP metadata...when the photo was created

Re: Date Created in Mac Finder vs PSU-Info Panel
Hi again,
I have a some new issues with this same topic. I'm trying to import some videos into PS, and they have the correct "created date" in their metadata fields when viewed in the file explorer. However, when I import them into PS, the dates don't transfer to the PS metadate fields, and the recipe I use for file names (that starts with YYMMDD doesn't register correctly either. Is there an issue with importing different movie formats that could be causing this? I've tried toggling on the options for "set date/time equal to the moment picture was taken," but this doesn't seem to affect anything.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Date Created in Mac Finder vs PSU-Info Panel
Unfortunately there's no metadata that is used for video files (like Exif is for photos). Every vendor can do whatever they want and as a result there's no uniformity in video metadata. Photo Supreme does support reading metadata from video files that are written with the most popular cameras; like Canon and Nikon. But as soon as the files are rewritten with whatever tool, all the metadata is removed. I think that your files are either not written with a camera or they are unsupported. Either way, when there's no metadata then PSU will try to extract a date from the video frames but like with metadata there's no uniformity there either and some (10%) do write the data and 90% some don't. And so when there's no metadata and no reliable frame dates then you're left with garbage. That is changed for the next update; http://bugs.idimager.com/view.php?id=2051
In the next update (will be released this week), then the date returned will be the file date. That is also what Finder is showing you. Like I mentioned before; Finder does not return "metadata" but file data.

Re: Date Created in Mac Finder vs PSU-Info Panel
Hi,
Thanks for your helpful thoughts about videos and metadata. Recognizing this limitation, but still wanting some date information in my video files, I was hoping that the new version of PS would enable a file name recipe to write the "file created date" (i.e., the date shown in Finder) to the image name. I just downloaded the new version, however, and the date written to the name on import is still the current date (i.e., the day that I did the import), and not the "file created" date shown in Finder.
Best,
Robert
