Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
I seem to have a problem with PSU after geotagging my pictures with GeoSetter. Once the pictures have been imported, I can see the GPS coordinates and the location information in the details panel, but other metadata like the camera model and make and all the exposure information is now missing.
However, if I use Windows Explorer and look at the details of the file, the information is all still there. I have tried synchronising the metadata multiple times, but can't seem to get PSU to display it. Any suggestions?
Here are screenshots of the information from PSU and Windows Explorer to show the problem.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
PhotoSupreme is fully XMP driven. What GeoSetter unfortunately does for images that don't have pre-existing it only creates XMP that holds the GEO coordinates while it omits converting the rest of the Exif information to XMP.

Re: Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
I'm having a similar problem with jpegs that were created by AfterShot Pro. Initially, the exif data was missing from the NEF and jpg files but I deleted the xmp files and then let PSU read metadata from files and the NEF files got back all of their exif data. The jpegs are still missing most of the exif data. I've opened the jpegs in Windows Photo Gallery, Picasa, AfterShot Pro, Raw Therapee, and Windows Explorer and all of the exif data is found and displayed. Why won't PSU find the exif data in a jpg? There aren't any xmp files written for my jpegs.

Re: Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
Hi Mark
I use Geosetter (admittedly for Raw NEF's Mostly) and ..
1. I have set Geosetter ONLY to write to XMP for RAW
2. I have added Image Details and Some Catlog Labels in Supreme first
3. I make 100% sure that the images are In Sync in Supreme before I pass them off to Geosetter
4. After Saving the changes in Geosetter - I File Verify the Folder - and the Import Data from File
and it all seems to work okay.
I have also done this with images Geotagged in the Camera (i.e. the NEF file has the Geotags in) and even then Geosetter picks up the Co Ordinates and writes them back into the XMP.
Hope this helps.

PhotoSupreme will always create sidecar files, never write into files? [Be free to create a new topic from this or put it into one of the two I created over the past few days.]IDimager wrote:PhotoSupreme is fully XMP driven.

A Preferences setting allows you to write metadata to the image file.Dierk wrote:PhotoSupreme will always create sidecar files, never write into files?
Re: Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
@Tom/mphillips, Mike doesn't have this issue because in his workflow PSU is the first tool that creates the XMP and then, as every tool that claims to support XMP, it converts the existing metadata to XMP to initialize the XMP block. Too mad that some tools doesn't do this but still claim that they support XMP, while all they do is write their own block, whihch is fine, but when they are the *first* to create XMP they should also convert existing metadata to XMP. Tools that I know that will do this the right way are most competing DAM tools, as well as all Adobe tools. Small tools that claim to write XMP almost always do a bad job doing so.
@Dierk, that is not correct. PSU writes sidecar XMP files for files that don't support embedded XMP or for read-only files
@Mike Buckley; there is no such preference setting. Embedded metadata is written to formats that support embedded metadata, including JPG, TIF, DNG, and some others.
Hope that helps

I am referring to the following Preferences setting in File Handling: "Allow embedded meta writing for RAW files (DNG files always accept meta)."IDimager wrote: @Mike Buckley; there is no such preference setting.

Thanks for all the discussion and tips. I'll try out the suggested workflow and see if it corrects the problem.

Hert,
When I open one of my jpegs in a text editor, the exif metadata appears to be there embedded in an xml format. Still, PSU does not display it. Here is a sample of what I'm talking about:
This is some of what is embedded in the jpeg:
Here's what PSU shows in the details panel:

It appears that PSU has written the correct date, iso, and other camera information into the files but in the details panel that information is incorrect or missing altogether.<x:xmpmeta x:xmptk="Toolkit=IDimager;Version=3.0.0.5;" xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/">

Tom,
Does it help you when you re-import this file's metadata? Right click on the thumb and select Metadata -> Read Metadata from File

Re: Losing metadata after using GeoSetter
No. I've tried that and everything else I can think to try. It seems to me that there should be some way to get PSU to read the exif data from the file and update any xmp data that it embeds. Like I said, every other program that I've tried opening these jpegs in have displayed the correct details, so I'm certain that the information is in the files somewhere.
