Problem: Color display of images in the catalog (PSU 2025)

Post by JensSteyer »

I have color-calibrated monitors (using Calibrite Display Plus HL).

PSU displays colors differently (far too bright, with too much color saturation) than all other programs (Capture One Pro, Photoshop, even FastStone Image Viewer).

What am I doing wrong? Do you have any tips?
Thanks in advance, Jens

Have you tried the Preferences|Colour management settings ?

Hello Geoff,
Yes, that's what I selected there. That's why I'm surprised by the overly colorful display in PSU...

Maybe you can share a screenshot of how you configured it.

Yes, of course, Hert:
These are my color management settings in PSU:

I'm using Windows 11 Pro (all current updates installed).

Here's a comparison of three apps: PSU on the top, Photoshop in the middle, and FastStone bottom.
PSU (top) displays too much saturation. (By the way, my browsers also display the colors correctly.)

I hope you have an idea or even a solution.
Thanks in advance. :)

You mentioned using a custom monitor profile. A monitor is an output device, so select that as your output profile

Thanks, Hert, that was it. :)

One more question, since all the thumbnails are still "very colorful" and only when double-clicking on the thumbnail do they no longer display the excessive saturation:

I updated the thumbnails for a few folders. Now the thumbnails also have the "correct saturation." I want to do this update "global" and not have to click into each individual folder, select all the images, and update the thumbnails.

How can I solve this with as little effort as possible?

Jens, just select ALL thumbnails and click on Rebuild thumbnails. That should do the trick.

Thanks, Sigi, I thought the same thing, but where can I find this option (Rebuild thumbnails)?
If I right-click on a folder, I can't find it.

I am on a Mac and there you would 1. select a thumbnail 2. use command and A to select all other thumbnails and then right-click and select Rebuild Thumbnails. I do not have a windows machine but I am sure google can help

Either that, or close PSU, delete the thumbnail database (or just give it another name) and start PSU again. That should force PSU to create a new thumbnail database and build new thumbs.

This works under Windows, too. However, since I sort my images into folders (Year > Month > Event, which has proven extremely useful), I would have to click into each of the hundreds of folders, which would be a real pain.

So I'd rather delete the thumbnail database (after backing everything up) – thanks for the tip! :)

This tip was really good (one hour for almost 45.000 images) - thanks again! And the thumbnail database is almost 20% smaller. :)

Maybe we should do that every now and then. :D

Glad it worked for you!

BTW, I like your picture of the wolf!
The animal seems a bit stressed though.
Just wondering if it was in the wild or in a zoo / park environment?
