thumbs.db is to big

I wanted to clean up my database again. But for the thumbs.db I got the message:

I deleted the database in the hope that it will no longer be so big when building it up. But hope has not occurred. The file is getting so big again.

What can I do so that the thumbnaidatabase doesn't get that big so that I can make a compact?

I could reduce the Image Preview Size 3200 pixels. But I would like to see enough details in 100%.

Or can it switch off the thumbnail production? This is probably not a good idea.

Can I put the thumbnaildatabase on another hard drive?

In the past, the image previews were only generated when they were displayed. Now the image previews are all generated.

What can I do? What is common practice?

In the Preferences|Catalog settings, you can change the Size and Compression used on the previews to suit needs. I'm currently on 1440 pixels and 85% compression.

The default preview size is 1440px, which will do for most installations. You could even do with a smaller setting when (most of or all) your files are typically available on the file system. That will reduce your thumbs.db catalog file drastically.
Setting a large preview is typically beneficial if your files are offline, eg the original files are on an external drive that is currently not attached. Or when you run PSU in travel mode. Then the preview is what will be displayed when opening the viewer.

thanks for your answer.

I set the Image Preview Size from 3200 to 1440. Now the size of the thumb.db has decreased from 81 GB to 27 GB. Now I can do a compact.

But now I know again why I had a preview size of 3200 pixels. With 1440 pixels, I cannot make a 100% view to look at details. I can set "Load Full Size Images". But then over sharpening is visible in the normal view:

It looks good at the slideshow. But I can't make a 100% view.

The main problem was that I had a low-res monitor with a result of 1920x1200 pixels. I still have this monitor.

With a preview size of 3200 pixels, the problem is not so visible. That's why I was satisfied with this workaround.

Now it is not this one and not this other. Do I have to buy a larger hard drive now? Or a larger monitor?
That is very unsatisfactory.

PSU doesn't apply sharpening (unless you have that option ON), so something else must be causing this.
The link to the other topic indicates that it is in your Color Management settings. A color profile is able to apply sharpening.

In CM setting, set both the input and output profile to sRGB.
Or at least try to disable color management to see if CM is causing this.

Your test (sRGB input profile is not showing a good result but with color management OFF you do get the good result) indicates that it is indeed color management that is causing the over-sharpening.

As explained in the CM settings, the input profile will be used is no color profile can be determined. As you get a different result with CM switched OFF, that clearly indicates that the sRGB profile is not being used, hence another color profile is being used.

I think this can only mean that your image files have a color profile embedded in them...and that profile is causing the effect.
You can check if a color profile exists in the file's metadata with right click -> Run Script from Repository -> Metadata -> Full Exif Dump

Colorspace = sRGB

I also tried other profiles. The problem too.

Notice that there’s an embedded color profile. That has the highest priority and is used above everything else.

Try to remove the embedded profile. I think you could use ExifTool for that.

Then try to figure out what software created the jpg and what color profile that is embedding. I don’t think it’s a correct one.

I deleted all metadata with exifttool. So also the color profile. The dump shows this:

Did you rebuild the thumbnail after removing the embedded color profile (no need to remove all metadata).

As you get the correct display with CM switched off, you can disable CM if you cannot get it configured the way you want. Psu then always uses sRGB.

I had created a copy. The metadata deleted and imported into PSU. Then the thumbnail is created.

Why is it correctly shown in all other programs (Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, ...)? Only in PSU it is not shown correctly.

I put a lot of time and money in my monitor calibration. And now I shouldn't use it.
A statement was that it is due to my low-res monitor with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. But all other programs can handle it.
If I make a mistake, tell me some. But for me it looks like PSU is not correct scaled for the display. Maybe only for low-res monitors when "Load Full Size Images" with CM.

A different routine is probably used for the Slideschow. Because it works correctly:

"Load Full Size Images".
Color management switched on.
And preferably with a monitor with 1920x1200 pixels resolution if possible.
And then in the preview view or full screen.
