why a Google API

Post by vkfoto »

For images that have geo-coordinates, on the GEO tag tab, near the bottom right is a an icon "show coordinates on Google Maps(tm) ..." which when pressed opens an instance of google maps with the coordinates highlighted.
For my needs, that is all I really need to know to help identify an image when several have very similar contents or the contents are so vague and generic that I can't remember where I made it.
My question is: what more does acquiring a Google API give me?

It allows completion of the Location metadata rather than just the Geo-Position data so you have Road/Town/County/Country information;

While most of that metadata is nice to have, it is not really needed for most of my cases.
Looked at the Google Vision pricing model and while 1000 units per MONTH are free, everything beyond that starts to add up. On a slow day I make more images than that on vacation. Not to be cheap but at that rate it would take more than a year to process my average vacation output.
The jury is still out on the subject of an API, will have to carefully weigh the pros and cons.
On a related topic, can the metadata be easily copied to closely related images taken at the same general area?

I've used the API from when it first came out, but have never had a bill greater than £0.00!! I would frequently submit several thousand images when doing event photography for SUP events. Its part of my normal workflow, hence happy to continue using it for zero cost :-)

Wow, you slipped under the radar or there is another pricing metric.

Google Maps is not the same as Google Vision and if you have an API you can exclude Vision. PSU doesn't use Vision for the GEO Panel, only Maps.

Maps comes with a free monthly bundle
