Request: Smoother scrolling, or additional scrolling settings

Post by randomphotoguy »

I really enjoy the Photo Supreme application - and it's loaded with useful features. But the biggest issue I have with the application is how the scrolling behaves on Mac OS. From searching the forum I understand that the app uses OS scrolling settings, but for me it still results in a poor scrolling experience compared to other apps.

In my experience, when I scroll with the trackpad, no matter how lightly I scroll, the page scrolls down by one full length of the scroll bar. Essentially, any small amount of trackpad scroll behaves more like a "Page Down" button, rather than a smooth scroll. Depending on how you have the thumbnails zoomed, even the lightest touch of a trackpad causes the page to scroll by many rows of thumbnails. If there is a way to adjust this setting in the application, I've not been able to locate it.

I don't think adjusting global OS scroll settings is a good solution here, because all other apps on Mac are scrolling exactly how I'd like them to be. It's only Photo Supreme which has this strange result.

It may seem like a small thing, but it's VERY difficult to follow the scrolling visually. You really have to focus to understand how far the page has jumped, and as a result it's much more tiring on the eyes to follow when scrolling thumbnails (especially since the scale of the scaling "problem" is different depending on your current view/zoom). Would be a big improvement to the app UX if scrolling was smoother / adjustable.

Or maybe I'm missing an existing solution which would be even better... thanks!

When I'm scrolling on a macBook using the mouse pad and using the OS default mouse settings then the scrolling is as expected. The lightest scroll up or down (two finger drag on the pad) takes the thumbs about 1 thumb up/down.

I don't know if I have much to add here except that I have the exact same issue. Just the very lightest touch with two fingers and the screen jumps a full page. Any faster than that and it flies. It has always been like this, with my current 2019 iMac, and the older one I had previously. This is with my current Magic Trackpad 2, but it was the same with the original Magic Trackpad. I've just learned to drag the scrollbar to move around.

I also have a Logitech mouse that I use occasionally. It is a little better, but still faster than normal. One click of the scroll wheel causes two rows to move. And this is with the scrolling speed set to the slowest setting.

PSU may be faster (or slower) than eg the browser. They serve a different purpose so comparing the scroll speed with other applications is not that relevant.

What does this script give you as result?

Code: Select all

Say(Mouse.WheelScrollLines)

That is the correct value.
Are your mouse settings at the default in macOS? Here's mine...

The iMac settings are different. Mouse and Trackpad are separate settings. Here are my mouse settings. As I said, I have the scrolling speed as low as it goes.

Just for kicks, I increased the speed to the max, and it had no effect at all. The mouse still scrolled 2 rows at a time at the same speed.

The Trackpad settings have a lot more options, but what it doesn't have is a speed setting. I expect it is based on the speed you move your fingers.

The only thing I see different between us is you have a laptop with a built-in trackpad, whereas I have a desktop with a separate bluetooth trackpad. Randomphotoguy didn't specify what he has. I would be curious if anyone else has this issue, and if so, what their system is.

But enough about me. I was only responding to say that the OP was not the only one with this issue. If he wants to pursue it, he can enter it in Mantis. After many years of use, I've gotten quite used to just dragging the scrollbar.

I'm using a Mac Studio and I have the same results...the scrolling settings have no effect on scrolling in PS. Like the previous poster, I typically use the bar so it hasn't been much of an issue. I don't think I would like using other apps with slower scrolling so I doubt I would change it just to get slower scrolling in PS.

Sorry for the slow reply - I never received a notification that there was a reply.

In case it's still helpful, I experience this issue both with the MacBook trackpad, and the separate apple trackpad. Scroll settings do not affect the scroll speed of the application.

IMO, this is a pretty irritating user experience which is always present, no matter which task you're working on. I suspect that anyone using an apple trackpad will immediately know what I'm referring to (and I'm surprised this issue isn't more widely mentioned). Fixing this issue would make the otherwise great app feel a lot more polished (in terms of UX) on the Mac.

Anyway - hope that helps and thanks for your responses.

I was using the latest version at the time I made the post (in Nov 2023). I was on a free trial and elected not to purchase the license for now (and this was one factor). Just wanted to give the feedback. Will re-evaluate during the next major release though as I liked a lot of things about the app.

v2024 *is* the next major release compared to what you have trialed in Nov 2023.
v2024 has improvements for the mousepad scrolling on macOS which may solve the issue that you experienced in v2023. Hence why I asked if you're using v2024.

A sentence about how the current PSU version's smooth scrolling on the touchscreen of my mobile Dell Precision 5770 (on the 4k display) behaves under Windows 11 Pro: Scrolling through the thumbnails with your finger is okay, but it could be better. ;)
My default image viewer is the brilliant Faststone Image Viewer. It doesn't scroll through the thumbnails much more smoothly than PSU. If PSU could be that soft, it would be world class. :)

On my 27" 4K monitor, with 150% scaling in Windows, I typically run PSU maximized with 150% thumb zoom factor (lower right). That gives 6 thumbs horizontally.

On a 4K laptop monitor you probably have Windows configured at a higher scaling than I have (obviously as the monitor is smaller). So I don't expect that you have more than 9 thumbs horizontally.

Play with the Windows scaling and PSU thumb zoom to come to the best working solution for you.
