Advantages of the server version as a single user

Post by Nordlicht »

Hello,

I use PSU as single edition.

At the moment I'm considering whether switching to the server edition has any advantages for me as a single user.

One conceivable use for me would be to run the server version on my iMac and access the database on my MacBook in another room or something. This is not possible with the single user version.

Thanks for your opinion

The Server Edition has the advantage that you can work with a centralized database and connect to that database from anywhere in the network. In general the Server Edition is great when having multiple people (teams) that need access to a central catalog with their assets. But in a home network, like in your case, that would work as well.

The Single User Edition has the advantage that you work with a local database, meaning that you don't rely on a centralized database. Meaning that you can work with the database while traveling, even when not at home.

All in all, it depends on your personal requirements which works best.

I notice that with my single user database things routinely pause. This appears to because of database locks or conflicts. For example there is a process building thumbnails active and I am editing labels in Categories. Or while a long verify process on a large folder is going on I want to swich my view, say folders to timeline.

Would having the multiuser version reduce some of the database conflicts?

Some typical reasons:

Is your catalog file stored on an internal SSD?
Is your catalog folder excluded from any virus scanner that you may have installed (if Windows, that includes Windows Defender)
Did you compact the database recently?

My database is on an internal SSD.

idimanger.exe is excluded. The following folders are excluded.
C:\users\*****\Appdata\local\iDimager Systems, Inc
C:\users\***\Appdata\local\IDimager systems, Inc\Catalog

I compact the database every night, after a full days work. Some times more often.

The only time I have seen things really fly strangely was near the end of the day, after I had been moving labels around most of the day. I was browsing folders looking for photos that were missing people tags. And after about 1/2 hour of that it suddenly started really flying. The thumbs would pop on the screen as quick as I could press the down arrow for a new row. Previously there would be 1-2 delay for a new row of thumbs to appear.

The database is large, I now have about 150,000 photos in the catalog.

Are you using the latest PSU version? Currently that’s 7.4.3.4738

Your version is fine. That won’t make the difference. I just wanted to know that you’re not using an earlier main version.

A 150K catalog isn’t that large. However, I hope you don’t load 150K images in one view and work with targeted/selective sets instead.

Close all tabs.
Open a folder
Check the speed

On every modern computer that should fly.

Ps. No need to compact that often. Psu will notify you when you should compact. If you compact at that notification you’ll be fine.
