The update in the latest update should not take more than a few seconds. Is there progress displayed?

But is the progress progressing?
What is the version that you have installed? Is that 4690?

Version 4672 (I think involved a DB update) and that took a long time for me as well!

Ah yes that makes sense. I somehow always assume that one always updates from the first previous version.

It's build 7.4.3.4960 on a database of 273098 photos. Updating database took more than 12 hours (I was asleep when it completed)

From which version were you updating ? Prior to the most recent update in 4690, there was a previous update in or just before 4672 I beleive that took ages to complete!
EDIT: Ah it was further back than it seemed see the thread here viewtopic.php?t=30530 it was when version 7.3.x.x appeared.
