Symbolic link, hard link or junction? (Windows and OneDrive)

Post by barneagle »

My photos are stored in a subfolder of the root folder on the C: drive. In order to have the photos backed up in the cloud on OneDrive I would like to create a link from the OneDrive folder to the photos folder. However, I find the explanations of the various kinds of links (hard links, symbolic links and junctions) confusing. Can anyone advise which I should use, please?

These two web pages seem relevant:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... -junctions
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... olic-links

In my experience, adding linked folders to OneDrive, DropBox, etc. is not reliable. I would not suggest this strategy for backup.

I found it on the internet and I was fond of it.
I've always got along well with it (with OneDrive)

Hardlink: only works if the volume is the same.
Node: any local volume
Symbolic: local volume or UNC path
