copying metadata from one file to another

Post by Shutter Bug »

I'm sure this is probably answered in this forum somewhere but I was unable to construct a search that the search engine liked. It kept telling me the terms were all too common so it couldn't search for anything unless I put in one uncommon search term. So, apologies if this is answered elsewhere in this forum already.

1) I sent a copy of some photos to an external tool I was playing around with and the metadata accidentally got stripped (user error on my part). Is there a way in PSU to say "copy all the metadata from photo A to photo A1"? Otherwise I have to send another copy and redo all the work I did in that external tool.

2) I'm transitioning from Media Pro to PSU and there is one feature that I really miss from MP that I haven't figured out how to do in PSU yet. There was a script in Media Pro called "Copy metadata from head of selection" (I can't remember the exact wording of that and I don't have the computer with MP on it with me at the moment but it's something similar to that). It would copy all of the non-EXIF metadata from the first photo of your selection to the rest of the photos in your selection. That was very helpful if you added additional photos to a folder after you had already done the basic annotating on the initial ones (things like location, description, event name, etc.). Is there a way to do that in PSU?

I'm fairly new to PSU and am still finding my way around so I apologize for what is probably a pretty basic question.

1) This is potentially "dangerous" to do because copying Exif 1:1 to another image can damage the target file(s). For instance when moving the metadata to a TIF file. TIF files typically depend on the content of Exif for correct processing and the pasted metadata may not contain such information, basically rendering the TIF worthless.

If you know exactly what you're doing (for instance, copying from JPG to JPG is safe to do) then you could use a tool like ExifTool for such operation.

2) In Image Details, open the drop down and select "Copy Details to Clipboard". Then paste to other images with the option "Paste to clipboard"

Thanks Hert.

I tried your suggestion in #2 and it is kind of working. When I do the paste, it looks fine. Everything is there. However, when I then hit "OK" at the bottom of the details pane, some of the information gets removed. For example, when I paste it in, there are 11 keywords but once I click ok, it only keeps one of them from the middle of the list. Also, when I paste it, there is a value in the creator field. Once I click ok, that value gets deleted.

I will email you screenshots of what it is doing since it contains info I don't want to post on the forum.

Thanks.
