Can't remove the "standard" label Categories

Post by Frits de Witte »

When creating a new catalog database, the standard category, i.e. Persons, is filled with the labelled old catagory People.
So, photo items get double labels, both in Persons and in People.
When I delete all items in Persons (getting a 0 in the list), I can't delete the category Persons (grayed-out in the delete-menu).
The same occurs, for instance, with categories Style vs. Genre.

I noticed this in the Dutch-language interface, i.e, Personen vs. Mensen and Stijl vs. Genre.

Pleas allow deletion of empty standard categories.

Same behavior in my german photo supreme Installation. Would be interested in a solution as well.

Some categories serve a special purpose and cannot be deleted.

From the Cataloging manual (chapter Creating Catalog Labels; page 10/11):
Upon first installation, the application comes with some pre-created Categories and Labels.
A Category is the top-level container for your catalog labels. You are free to define as many
Categories as you like or rename the existing ones. Keep in mind that some Categories serve
a special purpose in the software. When you decide to rename them then it is important
that you realize that the software still uses that category for its special purpose. For
instance, the Category “Places” is used by Photo Supreme to store hierarchies of
geographical information. If you rename Places to People, then that makes little sense
because the labels inside this category would still ends up in the geographical metadata
fields of the image.
PSU knows what the default categories are and hence why you can't delete it. If you have a Persons and People category then one of the two can be deleted. So move all labels to the category that can't be deleted. You can do that by selecting a series of the top level labels at once and drag them to the other category. Then delete the then empty category. Of course you can rename that category, but keep in mind that that category will keep its special purpose so it makes no sense to rename "Places" to "Horses" because PSU will keep storing places in that category.
