Setting Up ZFS NAS

Post by Dismayed »

I'm setting up a ZFS NAS to store my photos. I plan to access the data by mapping the storage pool into my Windows machine, so I'm assuming that installing Photo Supreme for windows on my desktop machine should work fine. I'd like my wife and sons to have access to the cataloged images, so I'll need to place the catalog on the NAS, too. So do I purchase an individual license for each person that I'd like to grant access? Or should I run the server edition from my own desktop (I never shut it down).

You could use the Server Edition by installing Postgresql on the NAS. Keep in mind that running a Postgresql database from the NAS requires sufficient NAS-specs: 8GB internal RAM, a multi core processor, and preferrably a SSD to hold the PostgreSQL database files.

You mention being able to install on the desktop. In that case you will have a very powerful configuration for the Server Edition. And best part if that the Server Edition is multi user capable (where a SQLite database is not and can't be used with multiple users). If you'd share a SQLite database then you'd need to mirror the SQLite database files, which can be a drag.

I recommend that you play with the beta also:

It is multi user (no database file copying required) and works with your Server Edition's database.

My NAS has a 6 core Xeon processor and 32 GB of RAM, so placing the DB on the NAS may be an option. I'll need to test it a bit, but next week.

That sounds like a very impressive NAS! That should be able to run a PostgreSQL database with ease.

I just installed the server version of Photo Supreme on my Windows 10 desktop. Import from the NAS went well, and I like the clean interface. I'm running TrueNAS Core which is built on FreeBSD. There will be a new version soon, though, that will run on Linux. So I'll test installing PostgreSQL on my NAS in the future. For now, I'll test locating the catalog on the NAS. Then I'll try to figure out how best to catalog my photos.

Nice software, by the way!

I've done a bit of tagging now, and I have to say that the software is excellent. PostgreSQL feels industrial grade - ingestions are fast and the database has been completely stable. And with the online viewer it looks as if it will meet my needs.

PostgreSQL is indeed a high grade database that is up for professional tasks. Very robust, and fast

Just a quick update, in case anyone else is thinking of doing this.

I'm storing my files on a TrueNAS 12 CORE server and accessing the NAS over ethernet. My PostgreSQL database and PSU 6 are running on my mid-2010 Mac Pro (converted to 100% Windows 10) with 32 GB of RAM, stored on a local SSD. It's all running well. I did, however, have problems with copies from my Mac to the NAS when I was running OSX High Sierra, but there are no such issues with Win 10.
