compacting database and tumbnails

After compacting database and tumbnails, i get the error 'database or disk full'. But the HDD (on a Nas) where the Catalog is, has plenty (far more than the double of the database) of space.
Somewhere I read that the default temp directory is on c:\Windows - but can this temp directory be changed and how ? My c-drive is an ssd and is not big enough.
