Direct import from Macos Photos into Photo Supreme?

Post by dlp0918 »

Please pardon me if this information is already available in the manual or the Forum. I have made a cursory look in both places and did not find an answer.

My daughter will be migrating from the Photos app on MacOS to Photo Supreme on Mac. She wants a clean, simple and accurate way to move the images and their associated metadata to Photo Supreme.

Obstacles/questions:
  • Apparently photos are imbedded into an internal Mac database and are not stored in normal folders, so directly importing into Photo Supreme from the Apple database seems unlikely to work (but I hope I'm wrong in this assumption)
  • Does exporting images from the Mac Photos application include the metadata in each image file? If not, how does one reconnect the image to its data?
We would really appreciate some "best practice" suggestions on how to make the transition successful and efficient.

Thanks,
David

The easiest way I can currently think of is this:

1. Open the Pictures folder in Finder
2. Right click (Ctrl+Click) on the "Photos Library.photoslibrary" icon
3. Select Show Package Contents
4. Open Photo Supreme
5. In Finder, drag the folder "originals" to the Photo Supreme application to import that folder

You should still be able to use Photos and at the same time use PSU on the same images. In PSU use Verify Folder Quick to search for changes in the "originals" folder to let PSU find new images in the Photos library.

If your goal is to leave Photos completely and move over to Photo Supreme, then please let me know.

Thank you, Hert. As usual your response is clear and helpful.

To your question, we plan to stop using the Photos application in favor of Photo Supreme. In our new plan, all photos will be stored on an external SSD, so they will be physically moved there during the migration to Photo Supreme. Do you have any cautions or suggestions to offer?

This could help you get started:

After completing and verifying the move, you can clean the Apple Photos library.

I forgot to mention that you must update psu to build 3201 first. Reason is that I found out that Photos exports invalid XMP and build 3201 has a way to read it anyway. Download 3201 from the website.
