Facial Recognition Instructions

Post by Alfons »

I need instructions how to use facial recognition, since I couldn’t find anything in the Quick Manuals. What are the steps to take to get it to work? Are there specific settings needed in the Google Cloud Platform Console?
Thanks and best regards,

I think there was a misunderstanding on my side. PS allows to DETECT faces only if Google is setup correctly and will not RECOGNIZE faces after they were assigned to persons.

I recently used TagThatPhoto to detect the people in my images. I had to pay for it to get it to write to xmp but having done that the areas all show up fine in PS and the names all fitted in with the existing people labels I had setup in PS. Overall I was impressed how well this worked. As an aside I have PS under OS-X and TTP was running in a windows VM sharing the same images folders.

Hi paulrbarnard

Thanks for sharing this info! It sounds very interesting, and I am certainly considering Tag That Photo now... :-)
You explain that the name tags applied by Tag That Photo fits well into the Label structure, you use in Photo Supreme. Can I ask, do you have "sub categories" within the "Persons"-category?
Can the label structure used in Photo Supreme be defined in Tag That Photo, so that it fits into custom defined structures like this one:

I've not yet had time to experiment as to what order the matching is carried out, but it seems to use the name taken from the Regions Nametag in the file and compare it with the Name tags in the existing PSU persons structure, if there is a match then the link to the file is added.
The only problems I have identified so far is where a person ends up in more than one Persons category i.e. a Family Member and also, in my case - Sup Racers - consequently I have created the person twice once in each category and then added a "self" relationship link between them so they can be followed. That way you can also have "different" names so for my Son who is also a "SuP Racer" he is "Phil" under the Family and "Philip Mather" under "SuP Racers" with the relationship link between the two groups.
Under the new V5 release I have also added an "assign ....." so when he appears as a Sup Racer he also appears as a Family member but I haven't done the reverse link so I can seperate out the two types of entry quite easily.

Mikki,

Yes mine looks very similar. I have several layers of nesting. I'm really not clear how it managed it, I did have some areas linked to labels already, and the majority of TTP names wound up in the right place. The ones that didn't were easy to move to the right location and subsequent uses of TTP added the names to the right locations. All in all it worked very well adding in several thousand older images that were mnot tagged into my library.

I've started to test TTP on a subset of my images. Still in the trial phase so no writing yet. In their Help file they mention : "TTP does not support hierarchical keywords at this time." Will that be an issue? How so and what should I do in PSU or TTP to resolve it?

Doesn't seem to affect me, after TTP has made changes I use PSU "Verify Folder" | "Verify Quick" to scan for files that the OS has noted as changed and then re-read the metadata, this picks up the keywords and matches them against the names I have already in my list of competitors which are in a hierarchal format, if there is a new name not yet in PSU then they are added to the top of the People category and can then be dragged to the right sub-structure.

Important for a tool like TTP is that it writes the PersonInImage field in the IPTC schema. I’m not a TTP user but if it doesn’t write that then you could send them such a feature request.

That's great and is what gives the best interoperability with PSU. On import, PSU will always identify those as "People" labels and will also be able to create Areas for the regions.

Are there any plans to someday natively support this within PSu. I am a bit reluctant to pay $49/year and having to use a program that PSu eventually may do better...

that would be awesome, this is the process that takes the longest for me and is really not fun (collecting and sorting pictures for 5 generations ...)
I no longer want to test with new software, and certainly not with a subscription
