V5 runs slow for me

Post by roddyt »

Since upgrading to version 5, everything runs slower than it did in V4. Not just processing photos, it is also the user interface. For instance, it takes about 5 seconds for the preferences screen to open, whereas it opened immediately in V4. No matter what I do, there is a lag time.

I have not seen any other reports like this, so I'm thinking it is something with my system. Whatever it is, it is not a lack of power. I have an iMac, 3.6 GHz Intel Core i9, 8 cores, 24 GB memory. I am running Mojave 10.14.6.

Any ideas?

Did you already try to compact the catalog database? Preferences open instantly here (macOS Mojave 10.14.6 update 2).

I have compacted it more than once since upgrading. I know it is not the catalog though, as I have a second, smaller, catalog, and when I switch to it, nothing is different.

Is your system equipped with a single or dual monitors? If the latter, try to detach one of the monitors. Does that make a difference?

I don't have a frame of reference to compare to V4 because I am coming from Media Pro, bit V5 is very very very slow for me, too. Even though syncing is supposed to happen in the background, I find I just need to leave the app and do something else while it is syncing a change because the app becomes essentially unresponsive. It can take several seconds for a sort to happen. When scrolling, there is noticeable lag in the thumbnails coming up.

Are you using a dual monitor setup? If so, can you try what happens if you disconnect one of the two monitors?

Ah yes, that makes a world of difference. After unplugging my secondary monitor, PS is speedy once again. Fortunately I do not use that monitor with PS, so I can just unplug it when working with photos while waiting for a fix (assuming there will be one).

Glad that I could provide you with a workaround until a fix becomes available. Thank you for your patience

Was this a problem only with macOS's or does it affect Windows as well ?
