Has Anything Changed

Post by MikeNaylor »

I'm back trying build 4.3.3.2082 (64bit) on an iMac 27" with Mojave 10.14.4 and immediately running into the same problems from all previous versions.
I began by importing a copy of about 400 TIFs that had been curated in Lightroom CC. All went well, except for taking a long time to build the thumbnails. I waited till finished, closed PSu, and reopened. So far, so good.

I then clicked ALL and immediately noticed the top level keywords were listed under Miscellaneous and again (where they belong) as top level CATEGORIES.

I then clicked on DETAILS and then Technical - which immediately triggered another Building Thumbnails. Really?

I'd really like to love PSu, but only because every other DAM-Like program I've tried is also full of bugs.

This is my first post since giving up twice before. Is it me or am I just waisting my time?

Same old problem with the Preview Zoom size. DNG files display small images. I reported this 12 months ago.

I also do not understand, why keywords continue to be replicated under "Miscellaneous". I have tried all sort of configurations (included exactly the ones Hert recommended) to no avail. I have gotten into the habit of regularly deleting all "Miscellaneous" keywords and sync back to the files, that eliminates the idiotic duplicates. It is not a perfect solution, but it works...

I can only assume that in my case editing images outside of PSU and saving them with a different file name and then run versioning somehow mangles this up. I have noticed that Photoshop for example strips some metadata from the images upon save (mostly my DarwinCore XMP, possibly because it thinks it is just rubbish). Then, when running versioning PSU always tells me that metadata has changed and suggests reading it. Despite disabling the adding of metadata from images edited outside PSU when checking a missing folder for versions this still does occasionally generate duplicate keywords under "Miscellaneous".

Generally I agree that PSU occasionally behaves a bit quirky and sometimes can be annoyingly slow. In my opinion this is a result of it being so much more powerful, trying to cope with quite a few more tasks then any other program. Still, have come to rely on it so much and find it a really superior database to anything else that I have learned to live with those quirks.

Despite the quirks being somewhat annoying, I never experienced a complete disaster, never had any photos destroyed or any data loss because of a bug. And I have used the previous version (IDI Pro) and now PSU for more than a decade. Perhaps I have just grown a thick skin ;-)

Welcome back Mike.

The topic is “anything changed”. You can read through https://whatsnew.idimager.com for that.

DNGs should be created with full size previews. Your dng file’s probably we’re not created with full size previews. You can fix that in Lightroom or when using the DNG converter then make sure to use the option to create full size previews.

Do not keep posting in this topic. Create a new topic per issue you run into. Otherwise nobody knows what this topic is about and some questions will even get overlooked easily. This topic for instance has 3 topics in them (what changed, miscellaneous, and dng previews)

Furthermore, make sure to leave all preferences at their defaults until you fully understand what they do.
