Keywords for videos workflow

I have quite a few old video files produced from analog VHS that are in some cases over an hour long, and putting in all the keywords for later searching would create an inordinately long list which would defeat the purpose of unique searches. I am wondering if anyone is aware of any 3rd party utilities that can quickly chop up the big behemoth files into handier chunks as part of my IDImager importing workflow - I would then import and catalogue only the smaller files.

I found "AVCUTTY" (AVI only and German only) and as well "HandySaw DS" (Does more file formats), both of which claim to have automatic scene detection.

Does anyone have any other recommendations or perhaps comments on these two tools?
