Why XMP-Files for Sony ARW?

Post by jtk »

Hello,

does anybody know why PSU creates xmp-files for Sony-arw-files? These files are from a Sony RX10 MK IV. When I want to write "Köln" into the city-field, it always creates a xmp-file, this doesn't happen for Canon-cr2-files. AFAIK is the ARW-file-format also based on TIFF like the CR2-files. Is it the German Umlaut?

If you've configured PSU to allow embedded XMP writing for RAW files, then PSU will write to the formats NEF, NRW, ORF, CR2, and PEF. ARW is not on this list.

In general I am against embedded XMP writing for RAW files. This for the simple reason that the specifications state that for RAW files the XMP should be written as a sidecar file. By allowing embedded XMP for RAW files you will reduce your interchangeability.

When writing to NEF, NRW, ORF, CR2 and PEF is allowed, why not ARW. AFAIK is ARW also TIFF-based like the others.

In general I am against XMP-files because the information is not stored in the original file and so informations are lost if you move the files. I've found no problems with interchangeability except the original manufacturer programs. Aperture, CO, Affinity, GraphicConverter and many other will read them.

That PSU writes into Raw-files is one of my main reasons choosing it!

It’ll probably be technically possible, never tried it, and never checked what the compatibility consequences are with main stream raw converters, and haven’t thought about the impact it may have for existing users that manage are files already in sidecars. Maybe something for the future.
