V4.1 64bit for Mac
Great to see a 64bit version released.
First attempt at importing to an empty catalog.
Import Folder.
selected FOLDERS.
right clicked on a folder and selected Make Top Level.
PSu froze.
Force Quite required.
Second attempt successful. Then...
Compact all.
Transaction zero not set.
Application quit unexpectedly.

I will not start a new thread, just use this one.
Things I have noticed
1/. no automatic identification of connected SD card, have to manually initiate import.
2/. slow loading and updating
3/. much quicker deleting unwanted photographs from database.

Moving a category into another causes a rebuild of previews.

After moving a few Categories around: Photo Supreme quit unexpectedly. Did anyone beta test this version?

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
Hi there.
I'm not have the problem with freezing when performing a Make Top Level.
Not with my old database and not with a totally new clean one with newly added photos.
I have not had any problems with creating and moving Categories around either.
But I do see the rebuild of previews as you mention.
Which version do you use?
Single or server user?
I have tested this on both Single User as well as PostgreSQL with a pg10 db.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
I have the Single User version.
I stopped using V4 and returned to LR a couple of months ago, but thought I'd have another go with this new 64bit version. I'm pleased the "development team" (i.e. Hert) has ported to a more up to date framework, but that's all he's done. The instability and quirks remain and are likely to continue, because the inherited core functionality was poorly written and probably undocumented. He tinkers around with the user interface and adds a few features, but thats all. If only he would collaborate with people who really understand database design, multithreading, colour management, and the need for an undo command that can rollback when the a user accidentally clicks in the wrong place.
Unfortunately, PSu is not alone when it comes to modern design. Adobe, Phase One, and a myriad of wannabees, are either grossly incomplete, hanging in with antiquated code, or simply vapourware.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
Mike,
I agree that there are sometimes a few instability issues and a some quirks. Though, I even see stability issues with LR, C1, and all the other software...
PSU is a very powerful tool, that makes almost everything possible that I need. No other Software you mentioned above comes close to the metadata and photo management of what is PSU capable. I have never lost my data in an official release, which I can't say about some of the software you mentioned.
Although, LR and C1 are mainly RAW converters with very limited possibilities in regard of cataloging!
Best Regards,
Michael

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
I absolutely agree that PSu is a more powerful asset manager - even with the issues. But if all my DNG files look underexposed and washed out, simply because Hert's idea of colour management is weird, what practical use can it be? Am I supposed to preview them in the Finder?

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
Can you eplain that in more detail and share your settings?
On my Hidpi system - all images look absolutely identical to what they look in LR
I have had an issue with dng files but that was more or less a user error.
Perhaps you can share a screenshot or even better a dng file, so I can take a look at it. I am sure Hert is interested in a file too.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
I think I've tried all Color Management Preferences and rebuilding the previews, but this seems to have little effect. Perhaps if I understood why PSu even has a preference pane for this it would help. Lightroom and others don't, so why should PSu? My monitor is profiled and all other applications appear to use that profile by default.
I do understand that every app will interpret DNGs slightly differently, so I guess thats the answer. Its just that all the other apps do a better job than what I'm seeing in PSu. I would prefer to import all new images into PSu and decide whats worth editing from there.
One could ask why I use DNGs. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. I've always used Nikon cameras and converted to DNG on import, but now I also have a Leica Q which only offers DNG (or JPG).
I should add that I'm fed up with Lightroom and have been trying to find something better for a couple of years. I purchased PSu and Media Pro SE, and I've trialed several others, but I can't bring myself to cancel my Adobe subscription just yet. Its so frustrating.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
It's difficult for me to evaluate the improvements as I'm still trying to get a handle on migrating from LR. I have updated and the app is noticeably faster which is a great thing for me.MikeNaylor wrote: 27 Apr 18 10:42 I have the Single User version.

Documentation is a key to this. So I agree with Mike on the documentation issues, if nothing else, since little more than a newbie, although experienced in LR and importing an existing file set of originals (in RAW .CR2, .DMG, .JPEG).
Can someone please answer my recent posts on how to properly import media and store it in a hierarchical folder set?

Mike,
One question: Did you update the DNG preview and Metadata? (Not just 'save metadata to file')
PSU is using the embedded preview to generate the thumbnails and previews...
In LR I recommend the settings as they are in the screenshot

And this is how it should be configured in PSU. EIther set your output profile to your calibrated monitor profile or use sRGB as your output profile.
Also, if you want your thumbs to be color managed then tick that box. After changing the thumbs settings, press Ctrl+Alt+T (Windows) or Cmd+Opt+T (macOS) to update the thumbnails manually.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
Thank you to weldmic, Hert and Henry-in-Florida for your comments.
weldmic: it should not be necessary to do this, because PSu should either generate its own previews or take them from the underlying OS.
Hert: your suggestion is ridiculous, because it would mean having to regenerate the previews every time I re-profile my monitor.
Henry-in-Florida: at last someone else on this forum willing to speak out.
One has to conclude the PSu development team are completely out of their depth and there is no hope this software will ever be ready for market. I've tried to come to terms with the short comings, bugs and idiosyncrasies for far too long. I had high hopes for this 64bit version, but its the same old code yet again.

Re: V4.1 64bit for Mac
It would have been better if which specific profile was saved into the XMP/db and PS did a soft proofing for each.
I guess Hert have a thought behind the current way.
