You might be correct, Vlad. I really don't know (and don't care) what is controlled explicitly by the Auto synch and what is controlled explicitly by the import process. If the Auto synch pertains only to writing to the physical file as the setting implies and the tip explains, it's confusing that the setting is not displayed within the other Write settings. Some of the tips explaining the Preferences settings have been incorrect for years in the past, so I'm not comfortable assuming the tip or the setting's text conveys accurate information about what is going on under the hood so to speak.vlad wrote:Unless I'm missing something, the keywords are automatically added to the Miscellaneous category because you probably specified "Merge keywords with existing Catalog labels" as a Read setting, not because you enabled Auto synch (which is a Write setting).

Mike, you are definitely right that Auto synch has certain side effects, beyond its main function (storing metadata to the physical files). However, the creation of Miscellaneous labels has a different (simpler) explanation.
Re: Additional colour designation for labels in Assign View
Well I do occasionally find that things have accumulated in the Miscellaneous category without me having noticed for a week or two, and an (optional) warning that that had happened in the LAP, where it's likely to noticed quicker, could be a bonus.
However if implemented I'd prefer the text to be a warning colour (of my choice), rather than a change to the background colour of the label...

Well, you are offensive to several people on this forum. I have been very restrained so far, but as this is the 3rd or 4th time that you have offended me, I had to tell you because you clearly do not notice it. I remember one occasion clearly. When opening the tab in my browser the latest page of comments had not refreshed, so my response did not make sense in view of the more recent comments. I noticed this just before going to lunch and posted a comment not to respond, because I was just going to lunch. What happened? Mike said "I could not resist this" and then started to outline how stupid I am in his eyes.Mike Buckley wrote:Just imagine how offensive I could be if I really tried, Stephen.Stephen wrote:@Mike
You can be really quite offensive, even without trying and this is not an isolated occasion.
I feel that being courteous in this forum is what distinguishes it from others and I hope that it will stay that way.

Re: Additional colour designation for labels in Assign View
IMHO, the miscellaneous category has its plus and minuses.
It is a useful repository for yet-to-be-categorized labels, but it can become overloaded.
Since using PSu, it stores all my new images, which are catalogued correctly. Older images however were in (I think) about 1,400 different directories. Many of these had keyword rich names. When importing them into PSu I selected to create catalog labels from folder names, so now I have those plus more labels in the misc category. That might have been a bad idea. As time allows, I work through those labels or keyword strings and ensure that needed labels are correctly assigned. However, new images mostly have priority when using PSu, so this will take a long time to finish.
Meanwhile, more misc labels are being added every time new files are added which have been saved with another program, i.e. after editing or when I get files from my customers. That was the point to my posting and Mantis issue.
So I am in the process of clearing the 'bad' misc labels, but constantly add some new ones

I like your suggestion for extending my proposal and for its optional use, which aligns with PSu's flexible approach.vlad wrote:Anyway, this thread shows that some people use the Miscellaneous category on purpose, while others (including Stephen) desperately want to move all their labels out of it. To account for different needs, Stephen's proposal could be changed (extended) to allow the Assign panel color scheme to be set by the user, according to any label category. In particular, one generic scheme could display any label in the same color as its containing category. (Note that any label category, including Miscellaneous, can already be displayed in the catalog browser using a custom color, via Edit Category.) Furthermore, the same label could be displayed in either solid color or light color, based on whether it is assigned to all selected images or only to part of them.

I think it's time to chill out.
Mike, perhaps you should consider how some people might not enjoy your very direct conversational style.
Stephen, please appreciate the fact that this is an international forum, with participants who may have different social norms than you do.
Mike and Stephen,
Please do NOT post anything more about this off-topic topic. If you see an an off-topic post that annoys you, take a deep breadth, and then carry on.

Having said that, I'm not sure if I would personally use a color-rich scheme. (I would like to try it, first.) What I think I might like is being able to quickly find out which label categories contain the labels assigned to an image selection. For example, I would like to confirm at a glance that all images have (at least) one location label (inside Places). Following the existing conventions, the Places category could be displayed (at the bottom of Assign panel?) on a green, brown or black background, depending on the actual case. Likewise, Stephen could use a similar indication to find out if the Miscellaneous category inadvertently affects his selected images.
Yes, let's keep it flexible and optional because needs are different.
Would you be prepared to add your valuable feedback to the Mantis post please? You have a better way of formulating requirements in programmer terms.
