Image no longer dispalys - invalid size

Post by touriga »

A number of you images no longer dispaly thumbnails - just blank. Rebuild thumbnail does nothing. Double clicking into the image results in error display "invalid size"

The images previously displayed without problem (I have catalogued them previously)

Viewing the image in other applications presents no problem.

There is no correlation with type of image of image or anything else I can think of.
I tried re-writing the metadata. That did nothing.

Did you compact recently? Sounds like an issue with your Thumbnails database. Also try to manually update the thumb with Ctrl+Alt+T on Windows or Cmd+Opt+T on OSX

Thanks Hert for response. I have already tried both these solutions with no success

Have you checked your files for corruption?

Hi Hert
The images display in other programs without any trouble.
I also forced a re-write of one of the files by editing it. This also did not help.

I have noticed it with both JPG and PNG. Those are the main file formats I use. I haven't checked thoroughly if any of the other formats I use are affected.

Did you ever determine what was causing this issue? I just experienced the same issue last night. It happened when I opened a raw file in Photoshop, made some adjustments to it and then exported it as a jpg. I imported the jpg into my catalog by verifying the folder. Afterwards, I was not able to view the jpg in PSU. I could open it in other programs and view it but not in PSU. The thumbnail was blank and when I tried to view it full-screen I got the invalid size icon in the center of the screen.

I deleted the file and will try recreating my steps tonight to see if the same thing happens. I hope it isn't anything to do with the metadata that Photoshop is writing to the jpg. Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Hi Tom, if you can reproduce this (JPG as created in PS and can't be opened in PSU) then can you send me a copy of the file at support@idimager.com?
Thank you

Hert,

I tried to reproduce it but couldn't. If it happens again, I'll be sure to send you a copy of the file.

Hert,

I just tried it again and did reproduce it. I'll send you a link to the file which I uploaded to my OneDrive. It's a full size jpg at 100% quality so it's very large. I did a minimum amount of processing to it and just exported it to jpg in Photoshop. I set the metadata setting in PhotoShop's export dialog to include Copyright and Contact information. That's another frustration I have. It seems that any jpg I export from Photoshop never has metadata embedded, or at least none that Photo Supreme can read. I end up having to use the cascade script to get metadata properly written into the files. I need to diagnose that further and get back to you.

Thanks!

It seems that using the "Export" function in Photoshop will result in a jpg with no metadata included. If I use the "Save As" function then the metadata does get embedded. I'm a little new to Photoshop so I could use some tips from anyone with more experience. What is the best way to export jpegs from Photoshop?

Tom, thank you for sharing a sample file.

The file you sent me is in fact a PNG file that you stored with a JPG extension. Make sure that the file name you specify in PhotoShop matches the file type.

That's odd. I don't recall specifying a file name with an extension. I let Photoshop rename it using the original file name. I would have sworn that Photoshop added the extension. I might have accidentally selected png as file type because that it what Photoshop defaults to in the export dialog but I can't explain why it would have given it a jpg extension. Maybe I did something stupid. I'll have to investigate further to see if Photoshop did something wrong or if it was just user error.

It's also interesting that Windows and OneDrive don't get tripped up by the incorrect file extension. It even opened successfully in GIMP on my computer here at work. Windows explorer reports the file type to be jpg and displays it with no issues in the default viewer on this machine but when I open it in a text editor, I see the the first line identifies the file is a png.

Thanks for looking at this. I'm sorry for wasting your time.
