PS and Online Backup

Post by MB17 »

I would like to know if: when you save on the file changes made to tags via PSU, do online backup services (in my case trying out Crash Plan) detect the saved tag changes as a new version of the file and will upload the newly tagged file?

Thanks for any clarification.

I'm using Crashplan. I don't know whether the file is changed in such a way that online services pick it up when you change a tag.

Crashplan does a block level test, so it will (i assume, have never made a test) pick up on that. Advantage is that not the entire database file needs to be backed up each time (or any file for that matter).

I guess I'll make some test after it uploads everything, like changing some tags, wait for upload (if it happens) then restore to see what version is there.

Do you mean you tested it, and it does upload photos that have tags changed by PSU?

Well, i know for a fact that Crashplan sees changes. It is smarter than many backup software, as it doesn't just look at the file's change bit, but compares at block level. So, much more precise and much less to backup in case of small changes.

What i am not sure about, because i have never explicitly tested it, is the fact of the changes you want to make, are then resulting in only a small part of the catalog being backed up (as a new version in Crashplan). Crashplan does allow a trial, so go ahead and try it. I'd be interested in your feedback.

I don't know if I understand your doubt, but I'm backing up my photo collection and will not use PSU until its first pass is done. Then I'll use it normally, and according to what you say it will backup newer versions with changed tags... Is that it?

Correct, it (Crashplan) will backup the PSU catalog (if you point it to the PSU folder of course), regardless whether you backup from PSU or not. That is not my doubt. My doubt is whether Crashplan will then only backup the changed block, or the whole catalog again. It should do only the block, but i've never tested that.

I see. I guess it should be only the block (the changed files). If I understand what happens, I'll let you know. Although it will take some time until it finishes the first backup.

I'm a bit lost in translation: are you talking about image file backup or catalog backup - or both?

I'm talking about the backup of the image file itself: if after savings new tags crashplan will identify the file of he picture changed and thus will backup the newly tagged picture file.

But, since you asked, I believe Catalogue will be backed up as used, right?

My impression is that HCS was talking about the catalog, while you are talking about the image files. I don't use Crashplan, but I would expect to pick up any file changes, including metadata (and, in particular, keywording) changes in images. (That is, assuming the metadata is saved to the image file itself rather than a sidecar file).

That is correct. Thanks.
