Hi,
I am new with Photo Supreme, and I understand the concept of keywords but I haven't really used them extensively in my photos. I just bought the license a few days ago and I am trying to learn the program and I have a few questions regarding the Details window of a keyword.
1) Label set memberships - I'm not sure I understand this from the manual. Is this a set of hierarchical keywords that one would apply to a photo?
2) Also assign its parents - I already have "Write hierarchical keywords" checked under Preferences so do I need to check this option also for the software to write out those keywords? And do I have to go through every default keywords and check this box in order to use them hierarchical?
3) Unassign labels with same parents - Can someone explain and provide example of this is being used? I couldn't find it in the manuals.
Thanks!
Questions about keyword's Details window

Hi tweebee,

- manually assign the parent labels
- set "Also assign its parents" on the lower level labels that you're planning to assign
- turn on "Include all parent level labels as keywords" in the global preferences; this will affect all your label assignments
Hopefully that makes sense. (I could also point you to some posts that discuss these options in quite detail, but I don't want to overwhelm you with info.)
Hope that helps,
Vlad
You are actually talking about the Details windows of a catalog label. Catalog labels are by default mapped to keywords in the image metadata, but the concepts are still distinct, although closely related. (I'm only pointing out the distinction between it may save you some confusion down the road.)tweebee wrote:I am new with Photo Supreme, and I understand the concept of keywords but I haven't really used them extensively in my photos. Nope - a label set simply consists of any labels you choose to group together (usually, but not necessarily, based on some objective or subjective criterion). There are some useful posts from Mike Buckley (longtime user) on label sets:1) Label set memberships - I'm not sure I understand this from the manual. It depends on where/how you want the parent keywords stored in the image metadata. "Write hierarchical keywords" is a recommended setting and will ensure that the full hierarchical info is written in the metadata field dedicated to hierarchical keywords (lr:hierarchicalKeywords). If you also want parent labels written as standard, flat keywords (in the dc:subject field), then you have a number of options:2) Also assign its parents - I already have "Write hierarchical keywords" checked under Preferences so do I need to check this option also for the software to write out those keywords?

In any case, no. You could always edit the details of multiple labels at the same time (bulk editing). And do I have to go through every default keywords and check this box in order to use them hierarchical?
I think the intention of this setting is to ensure that certain labels (and, eventually, the corresponding keywords) are mutually exclusive. Look, I've dug up a thread where this is discussed on a specific example: http://forum.idimager.com/viewtopic.php ... 26#p1077263) Unassign labels with same parents - Can someone explain and provide example of this is being used? I couldn't find it in the manuals.

Thank you for your explanations on the label set memberships and the unassign labels options. They are very helpful. I don't think I will be using these 2 options just yet for my photos as I'm just starting out with cataloging.
I am interested on more of the hierarchical keywords/labels posts that you mentioned, if you don't mind sharing them. Since I am starting out new, I would like to learn about them and doing these labels correctly and not wasting time correcting later on.
Thank you!
Re: Questions about keyword's Details window
Sure, here is a long thread that discusses various options regarding hierarchical keywords and parent label assignment: http://forum.idimager.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=23656I am interested on more of the hierarchical keywords/labels posts that you mentioned, if you don't mind sharing them. Keep in mind that the referred thread eventually focuses on some very technical issues that may not be of interest to you right now (or ever) - I would say the first couple of posts are the most useful to someone new to PSU. Anyway, don't get discouraged if you get swamped in details or don't understand something - feel free to ask for clarifications. One more opinion: there is not a single right way to do labels and keywords correctly - it all depends on what are your needs, the ampount of information you want to handle in your metadata, if you favor simplicity or a more complex workflow etc.
Good luck!
