Removal of keywords not working
For whatever reason I need to remove keywords that accidentally added (misspelled, just wrong, you-name-it). Clicking the "x" next to the wrong keyword appears to make it go away. "Apply changes?" and I click correct response. The keyword is still there. How do I make the incorrect keyword go away.
Next: If I applied a wrong keyword like "mvswain" (my last name misspelled) to a group of images how to I correct that on say 300 images?
Apparently this has been going on for a while. In 2012 it was addressed here:

Thanks for the support.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
Bob, a warm welcome to the forum.
It is important to understand how catalog labels work and how they relate to keywords. There should never be a need to edit keywords in the meta-data.
I recommend that you also read through the manual about cataloging. It can be found in the Help menu of the application.

Hi Bob,
While I'm in full agreement with Hert's advice, I'll give you some specific hints:

Do you have a catalog label corresponding to the keyword? In that case, simply unassign that label from the image(s).bobmcswain wrote:For whatever reason I need to remove keywords that accidentally added (misspelled, just wrong, you-name-it). Select the 300 images, go to the Assign panel and revoke the "mvswain" label simply by clicking on it. (It should turn from green to black.)Next: If I applied a wrong keyword like "mvswain" (my last name misspelled) to a group of images how to I correct that on say 300 images?

Re: Removal of keywords not working
I have not ventured into " catalog labels" yet.
I have 60K pictures which I am trying catalog, categorize, rate, etc. One of my main reasons for buying PS was that I could apply keywords to images (single or group) and those keywords would be stored in the images (EXIF, IPTC, etc). If for some reason PS goes none supported my work still lives in the RAW and JPG files. I've already gone through 2, 3, 4 ....products that have been discontinued and lost my efforts in rating the images.
DAM! That is what I am trying for. Digital Asset Management. PSv3 appeared to do exactly what I wanted. Except I can't UNDO what I messed up in the first place.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
Bob,
You don't have to "undo" things. Just use catalog labels. Catalog Labels are converted to Keywords when the metadata is written. Your topic is "Removal of keywords not working" and that is because the keywords are re-added based on the Catalog Labels.
Click the CATALOG button and then By Category and you'll find that your original keywords are converted to catalog labels there. Also read the Help manual about Cataloging. It will get you on your way. And finally, first play with PSU on a few test images to understand the concept before you start working on your 60K images. I'd like to prevent you from making some rudimentary mistakes now that could burn you afterwards.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
It's critically important that you understand the Help file Hert mentioned and that you gain command of the relationship between catalog labels and keywords. Once you've done that, PhotoSupreme will be able to easily accomplish everything you want to do including assigning keywords and removing mistakes you made in the past.bobmcswain wrote:I have not ventured into " catalog labels" yet...Suggestions?

Re: Removal of keywords not working
I have studied and studied and tested and tested, but have found no way to fix KEYWORDS for a image file DSC_1548.NEF.
When I use EXIFTOOL and deconstruct both the NEF and XMP, only the XMP appear to have the keywords in the SUBJECT field:
======== __Test/DSC_1548.xmp
---- ExifTool ----
ExifTool Version Number : 9.90
---- System ----
File Name : DSC_1548.xmp
Directory : __Test
File Size : 5.8 kB
File Modification Date/Time : 2015:04:11 15:34:40-04:00

File Creation Date/Time : 2015:04:11 15:51:56-04:00
File Permissions : rw-rw-rw-
---- File ----
File Type : XMP
MIME Type : application/rdf+xml
---- XMP-x ----
XMP Toolkit : Toolkit=IDimager;Version=3.0.0.8;
---- XMP-xmpMM ----
Preserved File Name : DSC_1548.NEF
---- XMP-dc ----
Format : application/octet-stream
Title : DSC_1548
Subject : 150405-CameraTest, Camera Test, Photography, D5300, 150405-CameraTest,Camera Test,Photography,D5300,SVDT,PPP,bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb, PPP, bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb, SVDT

No amount of manipulation by PSv3 appears to remove ANY of the keywords - either by using the FOLDERS/details or CATALOG/profile(advanced or IPTC) methods. The "x" beside an entry does nothing except remove the item from the screen until refreshed.
Thank You for my assistance.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
The Keywords are converted to Catalog Labels on import. When the metadata for the file is rewritten then catalog labels are written as keywords. If you want to remove a keyword then remove the catalog label. Read the Cataloging chapter, more particularly the part about keywords and catalog labels. Stop thinking Keywords and start thinking Catalog Labels.

"If you want to remove a keyword then remove the catalog label."
How?
Under the CATALOG tab, I scroll down to the "SVDT" entry and right click (Picture below). Then click DELETE. It is removed from the catalog, but not from the picture (NEF or XMP). Going back to FOLDER View with PROFILE showing shows "SVDT" still there. Trying to remove it there, just gets it readded to the catalog.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
acan you share your sync setting from the Preferences here? That is where you configure how catalog labels interact with keywords.
Also, did you find the Label Assignment Panel?

Re: Removal of keywords not working
Making Progress!
Below is the Preferences Sync settings. I have been using default setting. I see the one "Allow embedded...RAW file.." I assume I should have that checked in my case. Will this cause the data to be written into the original image(EXIF/IPTC)?
Also Keyword processing: What is the difference between "Merge" and "Replace" keywords? Only in the XMP, in the EXIF/IPCT, or both?
BAD KEYWORD GONE
Label Assignment Panel
By selecting the image with the bogus "keywords" while the LAP is showing I can right click on the bogus one(s) and remove/delete them. Then I can go to the catalog tree, locate the bogus keywords/catalog entries(with 0 entries), and right click "delete".
Gone. From catalog and from metadata(XMP).
Thanks.
Bob
PS- I have combined your usage/help files(pdf's) into a single file. It makes searching for stuff and answers VERY EASY.

Re: Removal of keywords not working
Hi Bob,
Yes, that option controls whether metadata is written to a XMP sidecar file or directly to the original file.bobmcswain wrote: Below is the Preferences Sync settings. On writing, "Merge" combines the assigned labels with the previous keywords in the file (some of which might not have corresponding labels in the PSU catalog), while "Replace" will clear up any previous keywords that don't have corresponding labels. There are similar settings (and effects) for reading too. Also Keyword processing: What is the difference between "Merge" and "Replace" keywords?
My frame of reference is XMP, but AFAIK keywords in the legacy EXIF/IPTC are handled too.Only in the XMP, in the EXIF/IPCT, or both?
Perhaps you could share it, for the benefit of others too.PS- I have combined your usage/help files(pdf's) into a single file. It makes searching for stuff and answers VERY EASY.
