Photo Supreme background info?

Post by eqbridges »

Hi,

I'm really excited to use Photo Supreme -- it's an application that I've been looking for over a long time!

I was curious about some of the background history of the application -- who makes it? where is it produced from? why was it created originally? I can't locate any info online about that, and since it's not open source was curious about what I can expect about it's longevity. A pointer to an "About" or "Impressum" page would be a good start.

Also, are there any plans for UI Improvements to support Retina (i.e. high resolution) displays? The UI looks pretty fuzzy to me when using a recent Macbook Pro.

Thanks for producing such a terrific product!

Cheers,
Ed

First of all, a warm welcome to the forum.

I wrote Photo Supreme myself and it was created to manage image collections.

No statements are made about future releases. As with any standard software product you can only "expect" what it is today, and what a product does today is what should make you decide to use a software product or not.

Cheers

Hi Ed,

I don't have any inside info - and I would welcome a bit of personal/company history too - but as a longtime (on and off) user I can tell you that IDimager's products have been on the market since at least 2008 (that's when I discovered them), and quite likely a couple of years earlier. So we're talking about an experienced company (which most of us indeed identify with Hert), even if it's not as well known as it deserves.

(Btw, I'm always surprised when someone mentions discovering Photo Supreme (only) after looking for something like this "over a long time" - I can only guess it's very hard to keep the marketing effort up to speed with the product quality, which is excellent and still evolving.)

Cheers,
Vlad

I've released the first IDimager version September 1st 2003. You were late to the party Vlad ;)

Though the past is no guarantee about the future with any company, consider that 8 complete DAM products (versions) have been officially released since September 2003 (barely more than 11 years) and that free updates have been provided regularly to all of them. Also take into account the long-term history of this forum and its responsiveness to customers' needs and interests; you can easily review and determine for yourself whether the forum demonstrates long-term commitment to the user community.

Hi Hert,

I really appreciate your opening up and briefly sharing with us the background story. (I don't care much for marketing talk either.) You have certainly invested a lot of passion and this indeed reflects in the quality of the applications and support you have offered. Keep up the excellent work and enjoy a happy and exciting new year!

Vlad

P.S. I am really glad to have joined the party - better later than never!

(I've just realized I joined the forum exactly 5 years, to the day, after you released the very first IDimager version - so I was only half a decade late to the party...)

Thanks for the warm welcome, all. It's much appreciated!

I am very impressed by the product, the long history and quality of the product is evident in the application itself. I found it really easy to get started with, and it is one of the few products that dealt easily with 75k images stored on a NAS. I still have close to 75k negatives that I'd like to scan and include, and I'm confident that Photo Supreme can handle this.

I, too, am surprised at how few products out there really do support large volumes of images that aren't stored on device that's directly connected to the machine you're working on. Aperture, iPhoto, Lightroom, Photo Mechanic -- are all really good products on the desktop but if you have a collection to share over a network, they fall apart. The best application I've seen thus far (in the past 10 years) for this has been Digikam on Linux, where it (optionally) stored metadata in a Postgres DB (much like Photo Supreme). For better or worse, I am now surrounded by Apple devices, so Digikam is not a (straightforward) option.

In any case, I do look forward to experimenting with Photo Supreme more over the next month or so; I hope to try out the Server edition and will be posting more questions over the coming days.

Happy new year & many thanks!
Ed
