Thumbnails Disappear

Post by digitalplace »

I have been using PSU Server Edition V3.0.2.2060 32 bit edition and all of a sudden my thumbnails have disappeared. I think that the problem started after I tried to initiate a rebuild missing thumbs the other day, but I am not sure about that. When I initially open PSU it will show the thumbs for the folder that I am in. Then within about 60 seconds or so the thumbs are missing and will not display. If I stay in the same folder then they are they still showing, but once I leave the initial folder and come back it will not display the thumbnails. I also cannot double click on a photo and have it open and display. I have rebooted the computer and that does not make any change. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help with this.

I have an update on this that I want to share and hope will shed some more light on the subject. I renamed the thumbnail db file so that it would be forced to rebuild. I was thinking that the problem could be with the physical file. Now when I open PSU there are no thumbnails, which I expected. If I click on a file to rebuild the thumbnail instead of freezing it goes through the motion of rebuilding. But still no thumbnail is displayed. I can however click on a file and have the image open, which was not working before. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I also have some backup copies of the thumbnail db file. Is there a way to restore just that, so that I don't have to rebuild all of the thumbnails. I have over 93,000 images stored in my DB.

Thank you again for any help with this.

Could it be that you have the filter switched on?

Also, just rename back your old thumbs file, but close the application first.

I am not sure which filter that you mean. I am set to view thumbnails right now as the normal view. So I see the gray box which the thumbnail would be inside, but the box is empty.

I feel like it is an application problem now that I have started with a clean thumbnail db.

Ah, you mean that you see thumbnails but without the graphic. Click FOLDERS. Is the folder icon red? If so, remap it to the correct physical folder.

Yes I thought to check that earlier and the answer is no. The folders are not red and they are all there. I have also rebooted the computer to make sure it was not just a connection issue.

That's strange. Does the problem persist when you change the view mode? Does the grid view display the correct info?

You previously mentioned some backup copies of the thumbnail db file - perhaps you could try replacing your current thumb db with one of those backups and check if the problem still persists.

When I change the view mode the thumbnails are still not showing. I have also restored the thumbs DB file.

I renamed PSU2_thumbs.thumb.backup
to
PSU2_thumbs_Data.MDF

This also does not seem to work.

I am open to any other thoughts or suggestions.

Thank you.

Wait, are you using a sqlserver database?

You can't just "rename" a sqlserver database file. You'll corrupt sqlserver. Don't touch the files that sqlserver manages...always use the sqlserver tools for that.

Did you try a compact database already? That will check the database integrity as well (on sqlserver)

Yes I am using the SQL DB. Yes I tried the compact DB and it just hangs.

Did it hang or did you not give it enough time? You posted so shortly after my reply that I don't think that it could have finished yet because you mentioned a database with 90+k images and then I expect the compact to run for at least 30+ minutes (maybe even more than an hour) and not 3 minutes.
Also, don't kill during a compact of the database. You're corrupting it there too. Be a bit more gentle with your database.

If it hangs for hours then your database is corrupt.

Yes I let it run for hours last night and it didn't get anywhere. It was just hung.

So are you saying that I probably need to start over from a backup db?

Indeed. And don't fiddle with the sqlserver database files!! They're not files that your can do file operations on as you can do with word files. Sqlserver is not a desktop database.
