PSU "not responding" during certain operations

Post by danaltick »

I've noticed that PSU on many occasions goes into a "not responding" mode even though it's still running. Is there something I'm doing wrong. Do I need to update drivers, etc. I'm running Windows7 64-bit with 8GB memory.

Thanks,
Dan

What operations are those? I am aware of the backup/restore.

Basically any operation that takes some time to complete either modifying or reading from the database. I've noticed it running the Version Detection script provided earlier. I've noticed it when performing Image Details modifications to many files such as updating my copyright or contact info. It also happens when I compact the database. I believe it happens during Folder Verification as well.

When you do large operations then it's not strange that they take a while to complete.

- Not sure which Version Detection script you refer to, as there is no Version Detection Script
- Changing image details is ran over the main thread and you'll have to wait for it to complete. But I think it gives a progress item in the Activity Panel, right?
- Compacting Database is a single statement to the database and the application has to wait for that to finish...during that time the application is in a pending mode. The fact that Windows then shows *not responding* is due to its silly ghosting implementation. Windows isn't even able to determine if an application is running or not. This started with XP and now more than 10 years later, in Windows 8 they still use the same silly implementation as they did in XP

Hert,

I was referring to the Catalog.buildSearchData script you provided to me earlier.

This anomaly is certainly not a show stopper and correcting it would probably require a major redesign running all database operations in a separate thread while continuing to handle events in the main thread. One suggestion if I may would be to make sure there are progress indications of some sort on all long term operations. Off hand I don't remember which ones did not show progress. I don't believe the buildSearchData script had one or the Compact Database. I will have to check the Image Details again for a progress indicator.

Just confirmed, updates to Image Details do not show the Activity progress indicator. I noticed if I click on the application during this time a white translucent film overlays PSU.

Importing keyword lists shows the program as "not responding" as well. The activity monitor lists (no processes).
