Preview navigation changes position within frame

Post by marklevine »

I shoot bursts so the subject of the image is in exactly the same place within the frames of multiple photos. My first cut at culling is to preview JPG sidecar images in the preview window. BTW, these are bird photographs so the subject is very small within the frame and the differences, from frame to frame, are usually very slight, such as a repositioning of feathers. The problem is, when I hit the arrow key to advance to the next image, the preview changes location and zoom level. Is there some way to avoid this through settings or user actions, so that the coordinates and zoom of the preview don't change during navigation?

A typical pattern of behavior is this: I preview an image, then zoom and reposition to display the subject with the window. When I hit the Right Arrow, the 2nd image is often positioned and zoomed correctly. When I hit the Right Arrow again, the position of the subject moves. When I hit the Right Arrow a 3rd time, the zoom goes all cuckoo. This seriously slows down my workflow because I have to reposition and rezoom the image with almost every navigation.

While on this topic, I have anther similar problem in the light table. When I display, say, four images at once where the subject has moved a bit, I can easily reposition individual images by holding the Ctrl key down and using the elevators. But, when I hold the Ctrl key down and reposition one image via drag and drop, all types of hijinks occurs. Once I successfully reposition all the images via the elevators, then I would hope that dragging one image would drag all four but unfortunately PS first resets the per-image positioning.

I am happy to work around these problems by choosing alternative user actions but I can't figure out what, if anything, works properly.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!
