HELP!! Catalog Labels added that aren't supposed to be there

Post by weisswelsh » 13 Feb 19 12:20

Hello,

Photo Supreme build 3.3.0.2607 (64 bits)
PC (non-Mac)

Some very bad things happened to my catalog labeling on thousands of files after verifying my folders and allowing the program to import the changed data from the files (although no data has changed.)

Without getting into specifics of the incident, I'll explain the problem from the standpoint of just one file.

Let's say I have a picture in the catalog with no catalog labels and no keywords already existing on the file or in the database. Now I add the following hierarchical catalog labels:

People/Family/Bob
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry

I now choose "Metadata/Save Metadata to File"

The file now has those exact hierarchical catalog labels (with the "/" delimiter) added to the file. Everything seems perfect in the world.

However, now if at any point I choose "Metadata/Read Metadata from File" the catalog database now shows the following hierarchical catalog labels for that picture:

People/Family/Bob
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry
People/Friends/Loesberg-Zahl/Bob
People/Relatives/Doane/Laurie
People/Friends/Galatsatos/Jerry

As you can see, it added three new hierarchical catalog labels in the database that were never used for that picture. The new 3 labels it added to the picture are actual labels I have created in the past. You'll also notice that the new labels have the same exact last portion (person's name) as the original 3 labels.

Even though the database shows these 3 new labels associated with this picture, the actual file still only has the original correct 3 labels still attached to it. Thank God!! Probably because I was only reading from the file and not writing to the file.

Now that bad news -- Now that there are 3 extra labels associated with this picture in the database, saving the metadata to the file would literally add these new labels to the actual file, which is really, really bad!!!

Have I changed some kind of setting that would make the program read "People/Family/Laurie" and also add in "People/Relatives/Doane/Laurie" all on its own?

Here are a few settings I have that may be important:
WRITE SETTINGS:
Keyword processing: Replace keywords with catalog labels
Include all parent labels as keywords
Write hierarchical keywords
Write delimited keywords - Delimiter "/"
READ SETTINGS
Keyword processing: Merge keywords with existing catalog labels
Read hierarchical keywords
Read delimited keywords - Delimiter "/"

Any help would be appreciated

Bob

Never write delimited keyword; hence why it's marked as deprecated. That is a non-standard method that was used before there was a way of writing hierarchical keywords.

Enable the reading/writing of hierarchical keywords. Disable the reading/writing of delimited keyword.

Hi Hert,

Thanks for your help.
I unchecked the reading/writing of delimited keywords, and confirmed that the reading/writing of hierarchical keywords was checked.
I restarted Photo Supreme to make sure the changes would take effect.
I added a new picture to the catalog with no kinds of labels or keywords.
I then did the Following:

Added the hierarchical labels below:
People/Family/Bob
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry

I chose "Metadata/Save Metadata to File" and everything seems fine.

I then chose "Metadata/Read Metadata from File" and the catalog database now shows the following hierarchical catalog labels for that picture:

People/Family/Bob
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry
People/Friends/Loesberg-Zahl/Bob
People/Relatives/Doane/Laurie
People/Friends/Galatsatos/Jerry

Although the 3 added labels showing in Photo Supreme do not actually show in the file itself (since i haven't saved the metadata after reading it from the file.)

Are there other settings in Photo Supreme that could cause this to happen?

I've attached screenshots of my read/write settings to see if anything looks amiss to you.
I also added the actual test photo (as it is after sending the Metadata to the file.)
Finally, I added 2 screenshots which show the Photo Supreme labels.
"write Labels.jpg" shows the Photo Supreme Labels immediately after sending the metadata to the file (this is how I want it to look.)
"Read Labels.jpg" shows the photo Supreme Labels immediately after reading the metadata back from the same file.

I'm not sure if you need any of this, but I thought I'd include it in case it helps. I'm sure I have some setting somewhere incorrect, but I just can't figure out where to look.

Of course PSU can not make up names for keywords. Looks like your pre-image already had keywords in it, either in XMP, or IPTC-IIM
When doing a test, make sure that you start with a virgin image, preferably a photo just shot with a camera. Copy that file to a test folder. Start with a clean catalog. Import that one file. Then test.

Hi Hert,

The test image didn't have any keywords in it previously. In fact, I created the test image in Corel Paintshop Pro to be absolutely certain it didn't have previous keywords.

The Hierarchical Keywords that you are currently seeing in the image were put there by me once I imported that image into Photo Supreme, as shown in the attached image "Saved Metadata Screenshot."

If you look at the attached picture's XMP details under "lr" you'll see that those hierarchical keywords are in the file as....
People/Family/Bob
People/Family
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives
People/Relatives/Weiss
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry

The above is exactly how it should be in the file once I added the following Labels and their associated parents...
People/Family/Bob
People/Family/Laurie
People/Relatives/Weiss/Jerry

So far so good.

However, as I mentioned in my post, the problem occurs when I now select the picture in Photo Supreme (with the hierarchical keywords in the file as shown above,) and then choose "Metadata/Read Metadata from File." I expected nothing would change in the Photo Supreme catalog since I had just saved the metadata to the file a second earlier. Reading it back to the file should show the same exact hierarchical keywords that I just sent to the file. But instead Photo Supreme now shows the following new keywords in the database in addition to the ones listed n the file....
People/Friends/Loesberg-Zahl/Bob
People/Relatives/Doane/Laurie
People/Friends/Galatsatos/Jerry

The best way to understand my problem is to look at the two screenshots above (named "Saved Metadata Screenshot.jpg" and "read metadata.jpg." The first picture (Saved Metadata Screenshot.jpg) is what Photo Supreme shows at the moment I saved the metadata to the file. The next picture (Read Metadata.jpg) was taken moments later when i read the metadata back from the file. Do you notice all those extra labels that appeared? As you can see from the actual photo, those keywords that were added aren't even in the file, so I'm not sure why Photo Supreme is listing the labels. It must have something to do with the last part of the keywords being the same.

I'm assuming this is somehow my fault for some setting I must have accidentally clicked. I never noticed this problem before.

Hi Hert,

I thought it might be much easier to explain if I showed you my issue in a video. I created a video where I took a photo with no keywords, added those labels I mentioned above, and then read them immediately back to the file, where Photo Supreme added additional labels for the picture in it's database. Those additional labels are actual labels I created awhile ago, but I don't know why Photo Supreme is adding them to this file in it's database. The video shows the entire process. Hope this helps.

The video is 339MB, and I don't know if I can upload it here. As such, here is a link to the video, so that you can download it. The link is....

Again, I really appreciate your help.

I tried this in V4 and couldn't reproduce this. Then tried in V3 and couldn't reproduce it either. In both case with the standard preference settings.

Since you've been fiddling with your preferences, maybe you need to reset your preferences. There's a hidden way to do so:

1. Open Preferences
2. In the left side, click below the "Other Settings", just above the lower toolbar.

It will ask you if you want to reset your preferences, which I recommend you do (make a backup of your catalog if you're unsure).

Once you have reset your preferences, your Sync settings are at default (like mine are).

Now try this again.
If it still doesn't work then you may want to consider upgrading to V4. V3 was last released in 2016 (there was a minor V3 release early 2018 but that was to prepare V3 catalogs to be able to upgrade to the then forthcoming V4). V4 is over 2 years of development in front of V3. There are hundreds of improvements in V4 over V3;

Hi Hert,

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:
I reinstalled Version 3 over the old install and it still happened.
I then installed Version 4 onto the computer and it still happened even with the latest version.

I thought it still could be my settings or something that may have been corrupted, so I decided to do a fresh install of version 4 on a laptop with no previous database or labels, and the problem still happened.

I thought the best thing to do was to make a video of the problem starting with a computer without Photo Supreme. From start to finish, I videoed the following in one 4 minute video:
#1 - Gathering of a picture from the Internet (to show there were no previous keywords)
#2 - The actual installing of Photo Supreme (V4.3.3.1947)
#3 - The creation of two hierarchical keywords (People/Family/Laurie and People/Friends/Doane/Laurie)
#4 - The labeling of the new photo with the label "People/Family/Laurie"
#5 - The SENDING of metadata to the actual picture
#6 - The READING back of metadata from the actual picture
#7 - During the reading back you can see Photo Supreme adding the label "People/Friends/Doane/Laurie" to the database for that picture, even though I never gave it that label.

I am not any kind of expert with Photo Supreme, so maybe I'm doing something wrong and this is my fault and not a bug in the program. That's why I wanted to video my steps from the very beginning of the install to where it gets messed up, so that you can see if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's an actual bug in the program. The reason I find it hard to believe it's a bug in the program is because there must be tons of people that have databases with people that have duplicate first names or keywords with the last part the same, so I would have thought they would have noticed this years ago with version 3. In any case, I really appreciate you looking into this. If it is my fault, I am truly sorry for wasting your time. If it is a bug, you might want to let people know as soon as possible because it could easily mess up thousands and thousands of labeled pictures.

It should be noted that on my regular computer I have 85,000 pictures and many of my labels have the last part of the hierarchical keyword the same as another, especially with people that share the same first name. So this is happening to thousands of my pictures. The reading of the wrong keyword doesn't affect the actual file unless I send the data to the file after an incorrect read, which unfortunately happened to about 3,000 pictures. But it's nothing I can't fix. On a side note: I absolutely love your program. Your program has made my life sooooo much easier. I love working with photos now!!! So.... THANK YOU!!!

The video is 472MB. I am sorry for the size. I used the worst resolution on the camera, but it still was a large file, and I don't know how to reduce it. The link to the file is the following:

Bob, thank you so much for this video. I had to follow the video to the letter in order to reproduce it. Build 1951 was uploaded to the website to squash this one.

Hi Hert,

Wow.... that was a fast fix. Thank you so much. It fixed the problem completely.

I am very much appreciative of you taking the time to fix this so quickly.

As I said before, your program is the entire reason I have enjoyed going through all my old photos and getting them organized. I have no idea what I'd do without it.
