Low quality thumbnails for RAW files to save disk space

Hello,

I used to save thumbnails of RAW files with the lowest quality possible. I only need to see a small preview to be sure that it is associated with the correct jpg file and to be able to send it to my editing software.

Doing this allowed me to have a much smaller “photosupreme.thumbs.db” file and therefore save disk space.

I had to upgrade to the latest version of Photo Supreme to be able to use the maps from the geoloc tab again and, I may have missed something, but it is no longer possible to change the resolution or quality of the thumbnails without changing the whole thumbnail database resolution.

Would it be possible to add an option, or perhaps with a script, to always save thumbnails of .NEF files with the lowest quality and to save all other files with the quality defined in the settings?

That would be even better than before is it was time consuming to change the thumbnails settings every time I added a RAW or JPG file.

A very warm welcome to the forum.

You can change the preview size to whatever size you need. That indeed applies to the full catalog, but won't affect the application as it did in the past. Even with mini-previews PSU will operate best.

You speak of thumbs, but more important for the size of your thumbs database is the Preview Size. What is your preview size set at?

For the database preview size, I used to set it to 640 px for the RAW files and 2560 px for the jpg files. Preview quality is always set to 70%.

The 2560px seemed to me to be the best compromize between quality and database size. I can't really go lower quality because I sometimes use PSU in travel mode (so without the ability to "load full size image") and that's also the quality use for the slide show (unless if it's possible to use full size image in the slideshow ?)

AFAIK, there never was an option to define separate preview sizes for different file types. PSU has always used a single setting.

But the way that PSU utilizes the previews have changed, making it less important to create large previews. That's why PSU now defaults to 1440px and typically it shouldn't be needed to have larger previews.

Yes, that’s the reason why I wrote this post, to request if it would be possible to have an option or a script to define separate preview sizes for different file types.

I used to do it manually (changing the preview size to the lowest possible before launching the “rebuild selected thumbnails” option only on RAW files) but it was time consuming and it’s no more possible to do it.
I think it could be a nice improvement feature because it leads to a smaller database size and so less disk space used, faster operation handling in PSU and quicker database maintenance (compact catalog) and backup. I don’t know if I’m the only one but as I wrote on the first post, I only need to see a small preview of the RAW file to be sure that it is associated with the correct jpg file. I then only work on the jpg files (review, tagging, geoloc ...) and everything is cascaded to the raw file.

It’s true that 1440px is enough when viewing images on a laptop. But when I show pictures to friends with the slideshow option on a 4k 65 inches TV, we can clearly see the difference between the 1440px thumbnails and the original 45MPix file.
