Thumb Database size

Post by PER180H »

Hello

My catalog has 70.000 photos, and around 300 Gb of files
photosupreme.cat.db : 7.43 Gb
photosupreme.thumbs.db : 97 Gb

I have not enough space on the hard drive to compact the thumb database.

The thumb size was set at 3200. I just changed it to 1680, hoping that it would have an effect to the 97 Gb size. after few hours of creating new thumb, the database still has de same size…

Is it normal ? Or is there a way to rest the thumb database from scratch ? I was think about deleting the thumb.db file… maybe a bad idea.

Thank you for your help.

First of all a warm welcome to the forum.

After you compact the database the size will decrease. Click the upper left corner hamburger menu -> Catalog -> Compact Current Catalog. Then compact the thumbs database. FYI; SQLite doesn't free disk space until after compacting (vacuuming)

Thank you Hert.

The problem was that I thought I still could not compact after that, as there is still not enough space on the drive… But I should have tried !
It seems I can compact, now… Even if the process is still running after 22 hours ^^

60 hours later… the compact process is still running. Should I worry ?

I do assume that you have the catalog in your backup strategy

60 hours seems on the long side. Is the catalog on an internal hard drive?
Kill the process and try again... I don't expect you'd need your backup.

Yes the catalog is backed.
It is on the internal drive. Only the photo files are ont an external drive.

photosupreme.cat.db and photosupreme.thumbs.db do not change, the last editing date is still at 13 November, when I started the compact process.
And there is no temporary files in the folder (db-wal files).

PhotoSupreme is not freezed. The compact progress bar is moving.

I'ill try to kill the process.

thanks

Quick news... :
I did not kill the process, I just quit the programme "cmd+Q"…
I don't know what happened during this time.

Restarting PSU, no problem. Trying to compact : not enough space…
=> back to the starting point.

So I deleted the photosupreme.thumbs.db file (actually renamed it…)
And then PSU rebuilt all the missing thumbnails. It took few hours, and now, the thumb data base is 42 Gb instead of 97 ! \o/

I have 55 more Gb on the hard drive, and I can compact. :D
