question about emulating external raw adjustments

Post by fbungarz » 02 Dec 16 14:47

PSu "supposedly" supports rendering of raw adjustments made by the following external raw developers: Adobe Lightroom, Phase One Capture 1, DxO Pro.
Ironically, using DxO v11 I cannot see any adjustments at all !!!

In PSu Preferences the following settings can be chosen:
- None
- Elementary
- Approximate

What are the effects of the different settings? "None" is pretty self-explanatory, but the difference between the other two is less clear to me.
Also:
I am trying to see the adjustments made to my DNGs made in DxO . Currently my settings are "approximate" assuming that imitates rendering the thumbnails as closely to DxO as possible.
But: when I adjust files in DxO the thumbs remain exactly the same in PSu, even when I re-build the thumbnails :?

DxO stores its settings in *.dop sidecar files (stored in the same folder). Does PSu read these files when trying to emulate the DxO adjustments? How can I force PSu to read these sidecars? Reading XMP from the adjusted DNG does not make a difference, even if followed by a thumbnail rebuild.

I have also tried "elementary" and "none" - the thumbnails always look exactly the same!

I just looked at PSu main website, which says:
Photo Supreme also shows you the essential edits made with DxO Optics Pro, PhaseOne CaptureOne, or Adobe Lightroom so you know what image you’re working with.
I have tried many things, but I simply cannot get this to work. I don't see any edits made in DxO 11.

On the DxO there is some discussion about this too, people looking for a Digital Asset Management that works well with DxO:
http://forum.dxo.com/index.php/topic,11976.15.html

I am sure I am missing something, maybe some essential configuration in DxO or in PSu, but I simply cannot figure it out. The raw files adjusted in DxO simply don't show up in PSu, the *.dop files are apparently ignored...

BTW: could this be that I am typically keeping copies of DNGs and NEFs side by side as part of the same version set in PSu? Perhaps PSu "sees" the *.dop file, but does not know if it applies to the NEF or the DNG?

I use DxO, but choose to show the originals (i.e. a setting of 'none'). However I just switched settings to test it for you and once I refresh the RAW thumbnails (CTRL+ALT+T) they do then reflect the basics of the DxO .dop file.

Note that the purpose of incorporating these features was as an aid to managing the files in PSU, not for display/print purposes.
Also be aware that many of DxO's adjustments are proprietary, so PSU is limited in its ability to interpret them (otherwise you wouldn't need to buy DxO). This explains the difference between the Elementary and Approximate modes:
  • Elementary - PSU only processes DxO settings that are verified as being 100% reproducible in PSU (such as cropping, for example)
  • Approximation: In addition to the elementary processing, where the impact of other DxO settings can be estimated, PSU provides an approximation of them too.
So if you are seeing no difference, I would imagine that one or more of the following applies:
  • you need to refresh the thumbnails
  • if you choose 'elementary' processing, that there are no 'elementary' DxO settings in the dop file
  • if you chose 'approximation', that the settings that you made in DxO are incapable of being approximately interpreted, or
  • that the estimation results in an image with negligible difference to how it would otherwise appear
  • or, indeed, your NEFs are confusing things - I rarely use NEFs and never mix them in the same folder as RAWs.

Hi Mike,
thanks for the differences between the PSu settings "none, "elementary" and "approximate". Makes sense.
However, I still cannot see any adjustments at all.

As I mentioned already in the original post: I tried to refresh the thumbs: no difference between any of the settings.
I am well aware that the adjustments applied by DxO are proprietary, but still I would expect to at least see some differences.
Too bad...
