Exif IPTC Keywords and Ratings not being picked up

Post by rjh1007 » 28 Dec 20 10:25

I imported 4,863 images successfully for the year 2020 - most keywords were missing, however, all exif data and iptc data came over and many of the star and color ratings were missed.
I then imported 7,298 images for 2019 again most keywords were missing, however, this time NO exif data or iptc data came over and again many of the star and color ratings were missed.
I verified the folders - no joy.
I used the tools/Read metadata for all out of sync files - no joy.
I have closed and relaunched PSU and also ran tools/Build missing thumbnails and previews - no joy.

As an example I have attached a screen print of the Details/Technical display - it is pretty obvious that there are 12,161 images and only exif data for 4,860 - the same number of images imported in the 2020 import.
What to do?
Thanks
Bob

From how you describe it, it appears that your images have "half baked" XMP data in them, meaning that there's a XMP block that is not complete. Unfortunately too many tools out (still) there fail to correctly keep metadata in sync between all metadata levels (Exif/IPTC/XMP). Photo Supreme allows you to complete your XMP block. Use right click on a thumbnail and then select Metadata -> Convert Metadata to XMP. That will convert existing Exif and IPTC to the higher level XMP, something that the software should have done that first created the XMP.

Does that bring in your data?

Yes. Thank you.
I do have one question plus two other issues.
Question - after I used the Metadata -> Convert Metadata to XMP on the above 2019 the displayed thumbs looked very dull and darker. Before I ran the Metadata -> Convert Metadata to XMP they were surprisingly close to the color and brightness of my original thumbs in Capture One. I ran the operations/rebuild select thumbs but that made no difference. I also tried changing the preferences/file handling/file handling settings for Capture One - none and elementary made no difference and approximate changed most of the thumbs to a blank white thumb. Is there away to get back to the better color and brightness like they were?

Issue 1 - When importing to catalog a larger folder with sub-folders (2019 and 35 subfolders - approx 7,300 images) the import starts fine and after about two minutes displays 41.6% and then takes approx 1 min 50 seconds to process 1% more. That would be just under 2 hours to complete the remaining 59%. However, if I stopped the processing, exited and re-opened PSU and ran tools/Read metadata for all out of sync files it took about 23 minutes to go from 0 to 100% and all the thumbs, metadata and exif appear to be correct. It would be so much easier to import my next 90,000 images if the import wizard worked faster.

Issue 2 - when filename is selected as the sort order it is sorting as follows 1,10, 100, 101..............199,2,20,200, 201, 202............... 3, etc - you get the idea. Of course it should be 1,2,3,4 etc.
The sorting by filename is correct in Windows explorer, Adobe Bridge, Capture One, DXO and when I was trialing Photo Mechanic Plus in their navigator, however, it is always incorrect in PSU. If I sort on photo date then the files are sorted correctly by both photo date time and filename. See example screen shots - the first one is in correct order and sorted by photo date. The second is by filename and you can easily see the issue.

That sounds like color management. Did you switch off color management support in preferences? Either way: if the colors changed then by converting the metadata to XMP the color space info is also transferred. And by default PSU generates thumbs with color management support. Make sure you have color management support switched on, also for thumbnail building.

If you're using "import" then that does a lot more than only reading metadata to the catalog. Check how your import profile is configured. Could be that you have it configured to do version detection, maybe apply detail profiles, assign catalog labels, etc on import.

If you want to import a folder by just reading its metadata then use "Import from Folder" instead of using the advanced Import Module.

You can use the Sort Script from the repository "Sort by Numeric FileName". Find that in the sort drop down of the View button. But sorting with a script can be a lot slower than using the integrated sort options.
Why not simply use "Sort by Photo Date"? After all, that does what you need.

Thanks for your reply
In response to your suggestions
1 - Color management was turned on - even so the loss of color and brightness was huge.
You mentioned having color management support also turned on for thumbnail building - is there somewhere other than preferences/color management where this can be set?
2 - The Import profile has only " include subfolders", "import detail profile" and "apply catalog labels" checked.
3 - The "sort by numeric Filename" from the repository makes an even worse mess of the displayed sort order. I understand I can use the "Sort by date", however, "sort by filename" is a standard method across most software packages and it is not working correctly in PSU.
