Moving to a new computer

Post by barneagle » 28 Aug 20 20:54

Is there a guide to moving Photo Supreme to a new PC?

Is it sufficient to do the following?
- backup catalog and thumbnails on the old PC
- copy the backups to the equivalent* location on the new PC
- copy the image files to the same location on the new PC
- install Photo Supreme on the new PC
- run it

What extra steps, if any, will I need to follow?

* I say "equivalent" location. Does it matter that the user name in the file structure (C:\Users\[username]\...) that Windows has assigned on the new PC is different?

The Maintenance manual describes the steps for moving to a new PC. Your steps are close :)

Thanks. The move seems to have worked.

After completing the move I tried to update the software. I'm now looking at a dialog headed "Info" which tells me to keep the dialog open and close the application. I've closed the application. Should I now click OK (closing the dialog, presumably) to allow the update to continue. Sorry if this is an idiot question!

Can you post a screenshot of that message?

I have attached a photo.

I've now checked Task Manager and don't see any IDImager processes.

If there are no processes, then click OK.

Thanks. Clicking OK led to a dialog with a button saying "Run the update now ...". Unfortunately after I clicked that I got a "failed to execute" error message. See the attached screenshot.

I've tried running PSu as administrator then accepting the update prompt, quitting PSu, checking Task Manager for IDImager processes, clicking OK in the PSu update dialog, clicking "Run the update now ...". Sadly, I get the same error message.

Should I go into AppData and run webUpdate.exe as administrator?

Either run as administrator or simpler: download the latest version from the website and install it over your existing version.

Another issue is that I now have two copies of the Catalog hogging storage space. I copied the Catalog db files from my previous computer to C:\Users\[username]\PSU Catalog. After installing the program I restored the catalog from there. I now see that PSu has duplicated the catalog files in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ID Imager Systems Inc.

Can I safely delete the catalog files from C:\Users\[username]\PSU Catalog ?

1. Enable the login dialog in preferences
2. Start PSU
3. Select your catalog from the folder where you copied it to
4. Close PSU
5. Delete the Catalog folder that PSU created in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ID Imager Systems Inc.
6. Start PSU
