Fuzzy/approximate dates?

Post by LifeIsLong » 17 Jul 20 16:52

According to user mke, there is a standard for EXIF data to handle fuzzy or approximate dates (viewtopic.php?p=121535#p121490). Is there any progress on this? Can we use this in PSU?

(Here is the standard Mke linked to: https://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime/edtf.html)

Looks like CIPA DC-010-2020 (the 2020 version of Exif Version 2.32, if that make's any sense), available from here is the latest. It does reference ISO 8601, but hasn't incorporated the 'fuzzy date notation'.

It would be a great facility for non-digital/historic images scanned in for which an exact date is unavailable.

I have a lot of scanned images and would benefit from an approximate date. My current rather un-scientidfic approach is to use "April 27".
As soon as I have a year (for example 1945) but no date I enter the date as 1945-04-27. So when I see a date of 1882-04-27 I know I have no date ... only the year 1882.

Me too - nearly 6,000 of them scanned so far, with maybe another 10,000 pending. As per my message mentioned by LifeIsLong, I record the date of scans in the file name only, using fillers for unknowns - so 199ymmdd or (if the decade is uncertain) c1990mmdd, and hope that a metadata fix will turn up in the future.

Would also like this feature. My scanned files have the closest known date in the file name. Having the scanned date is not very helpful when looking at the timeline. Redating them one at a time can quickly become a pita. Is there a quicker way to do this? Parsing the start of the file name to extract the known values and plugging then into the appropriate fields.
