Read Metadata from XMP?

Post by ruebyi » 01 May 18 18:19

Hi

I'm just investigation wether Photo Supreme could be part of my workflow.
At the moment I'm struggeling with a problem: I would like to read out the Metadata from the XMP Files wich I wrote to my existing RAWs.

Can you tell me how to do this?

Best
Tobias

Welcome to the forum Tobias!

If it is written as a standard xmp file, PSU should do that on import automatically.
However, I believe the xmp sidecar file should be in the same folder...

If it does not, maybe you can provide an xmp file in order for Hert to take a look at it...

Well it does not at the moment - the xmps are written from Lightroom - I'm trying to switch from Lightroom to PS + DxO

Importing from Lightroom Database didn't work either

XMP and JPGs + RAWs are in the same folder

Tobias,

Can you try the following with an image that is already in the PSU catalog:
In LR give an image a star rating and then write out the metadata
Then go to PSU and select that image and use right click, Metadata, read metadata from file

Does PSU show the star rating?

BTW: here are my read settings in PSU:

It does - I think I found a problem... Color lable is set to "gelb" because I'm from Germany... Photo Supreme only allows "yellow" as a valid color lable.
So somhow I need to translate this...

Yeah, that is a problem...

You can change the settings in PSU
Preferences, Catalog, Color label Names

Just set them to whatever you need :)

No, that's not enough - I need to translate the "gelb" in the XMP to "Yellow" - Because yellow will be accepted as what ever I set for the yellow lable in the settings

Tobias,

I have just tried it out. It works on my system!
However, after you changed the setting in PSU you need to read the metadata from file again...

Then it should reflect the color you want to see. If you still have problems, please let me know and I try to make a screencast.

On NEF or DNG-files the PhotoSupreme reads the the settings from IPTC, EXIF and ratings from the xmp-file,
but no changes in the settings in the image for example color adjustment or crop.
Is that possible to get?

Welcome to the forum.
Photo Supreme reads all metadata from the XMP, regardless who wrote it and regardless if it's supported or not. You can view all XMP in the XMP Advanced section of the Image Details.
Color adjustments and cropping are typically not recorded by cameras but by a (RAW) editor. And afaik only one editor stores those in the XMP. Apart from that, color adjustments are proprietary to the editor software that wrote it. What editor writes what color adjustments and crops to the XMP?

As mentioned above, parametric editors (like Lightroom/ACR) are proprietary. They store their edits as a set of parameters and only their own product is able to interpret that parameter. For instance "exposure +1" is different in every editor. That is what makes every editor different is is the unique selling point of that product.
Photo Supreme supports Lightroom/ACR edits up to a basic level. Crops will be interpreted. Make sure that you have Lightroom enabled in the Preferences -> File Handling -> Lightroom Edits Support
