Cant seem to import more than 193 images

Post by LucLL » 27 Jul 16 23:25

Hi All,

Anyone any clue here ...

Importing images from a SD card:
- Copy to a new location and renaming the files works fine.
- Only 193 images are "imported" in the DB although all have been copied to new location.
- Verifying and importing the images then does not resolve the issue.
- Performing a new import (without now relocating images) from the already copied/renamed files, imports the next range.

I tried several rounds of this and removed/deleted all the images to do a clean import but no different result.

Any suggestion welcome as importing pictured in batches of 913 takes the fun out of import :)

Thanks!
L.

That's weird. Is there any error or hint given upon importing the lucky 193 images, or did you figure out that magic threshold by yourself?

No error or anything.
I thought its maybe because the 194th image would be damaged or so and not readable. but I have it with each set and different files.

Mike, if you don't have to say something that might help, please refrain from posting...

So, Michael, joking is not allowed here any more. I've been an IDimager customer for eight years and, frankly, expect treatment of my posts at least the same as treatment of Hert's posts. He also occasionally writes off-topic posts that understandably are not helpful to anyone. Indeed, I expect a public apology. A "thank you" for being an IDimager customer and for consistently publicly promoting its products and this very forum all these years would also be appreciated.

Hi Luc, what happens if you try the import with a different import profile (created from scratch)? I would also restart the machine, just in case.

[OFF TOPIC]

I'm not sure why people are so touchy these days. Since I generally try to be helpful, yet occasionally make off-topic remarks (including jokes) too, I have to defend Mike. Occasional jokes and light remarks don't make this forum Facebook, but admonishing a fellow Photo Supremacist could make it a bit unfriendly.

I am always amazed at the lengths people like Mike and Vlad and others go to to help people on this forum, even recreating issues, offering alternatives and solutions and explaining how scenarios have probably arisen, and usually with a high degree of product knowledge, insight, analytical thinking and diagnostic skills.

I've just checked my join date. I've been on this forum for over 9 years and in all that time until recently I can never once recall any ill-spoken words. Some passionate ones, yes, where feelings on a subject have run high, but not intemperate or ill-tempered. That's an amazing record of friendliness and helpfulness. I for one would want it to stay that way. Mike, Vlad, Frank, etc... keep up the great work. I for one appreciate it.

[OFF TOPIC] - sorry for starting this discussion. I didnt want to start one!

"6. Only respond to topics when you have something to contribute to the subject of that topic" - one of the rules of this forum

I don't think anyone has a problem with a joke - as long as this is "within" a response to a topic.
But just responding to a topic to make a joke is not the perfect approach :)

Just look at it from a different perspective: you get a notification about an answer to one of your questions you asked and you go to the topic only to learn someone responded to a topic without any contribution to your subject!

This is only my personal opinion...

Cheers,
Michael

To get back on track (I am sure Luc would appreciate some advice instead of discussions whether jokes are appropriate):
I think it makes sense for a download to stop, if the downloader encounters a corrupted file.
Luc - what happens if you try using the "verify folder" command instead of the importer? Is PSu able to see all the files you are trying to import? Are you sure you checked all the files? Did you configure the importer perhaps to skip duplicates? PSu somehow tags images after import so that the same ones are not imported a second time. So, if you are trying to re-import the same images several times perhaps only the ones not previously imported will be.
Also: Perhaps you are using some sort of re-naming script or a custom folder renaming rule?

Trying out a script as part of my import wizard to rename my files I recently had a similar experience. Hert was telling me that his script was working on his own machine, but when I tried it, I was always told the images were either already in the database or already on my hard drive. It turned out that I had not configured the second part of the script correctly and the download was always breaking of somewhere before any files got copied...

So, depending on your exact settings there may be quite a few reasons, why a download breaks off someplace. But, in any case - stopping again and again at the same number 193 definitely seems very, very odd.
Perhaps you should post some screenshots, to illustrate, which settings you are using...
People here might more easily be able to figure out exactly what is wrong.

PS: an alternative, if nothing is working is always the verify folder command. Not perfect, not as flexible, but at least still a way to get your files into PSu until you have figured out what is wrong with the importer...

You've violated that rule many times. Hert has violated that rule many times. I've violated that rule many times. A LOT of people have violated that rule many times. All of that is completely understandable because this is a community of people, not mechanical robots.

It's in that context that you are completely out of line for singling me out. I've been posting regularly here for eight years and I think I've read every post written in the IDimager and Supreme forums during that period of time. I've posted about 4500 posts and I don't remember anyone telling me or anyone that if a joke is made it has to be made in a post that also provides help. I would expect you to at least give longtime helpful contributors the benefit of the doubt. Instead, you singled me out for whatever reason. And when given the chance to apologize, you held your ground.
This is only my personal opinion...
No, it's not only your personal opinion. You're a moderator, which means you're acting and posting on behalf of and with authority of IDimager Systems.

Even so, as you might see in a post of mine in another thread, you'll have no need to be concerned about my posts in the future. Considering that you are again a representative of IDimager, the reasoning explained in that post might be of interest to you.

I have just seen this and hope that you have managed to solve it, but if not, then you might check the free space on your drive. PSu appears to use a lot during the import process. When I had a similar problem with imports over about 180 images, I did discover that the problem went away when an additional external hard drive was attached. That might be just a Mac issue, but it is worth trying.

Incidentally, it might be safer to import your images from disk* rather than directly from the memory card, just to prevent any possible card damage. * i.e. copy from card to disk first, by the method you trust most. I use ChronoSync which also verifies the files.

Good luck and please inform us when you manage to solve this.
Never say never change, but using Mac since 2005. Photo Supreme 3.3.0.2605. I endorse the interoperability of files between applications and systems.

Hi All,
Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. Apologies that I disappeared from the globe for a while... due to vacations, traveling etc (and work too).

In short: Its solved. After I updated to the latest version I do not seem to have any problem anymore with the import. I yesterday imported a batch of about 750 media items and it worked just fine.

So no, there was no shortage on storage (several TBs left), I did use at the time , verification of the folder, reimporting of the folder, reimporting of the pictures from SD, etc etc. but nothing worked. So I left it as it was as I had to leave/travel. I kept the SD cards aside and did it again after I found there is another update available. Since then no issues.

Again, thank you all to be supportive and trying to help. Its sometimes the most simple/evident items you oversee and where a user community can be very helpful.. So thanks again.

Regarding the //off_topic note.... as the requestor/user of this post I don't mind a soft joke in-between... but honestly... if the only part of the post is the just the joke, then don't bother doing so in a user forum like this. ... as wise words once said... if you have nothing interesting or wise to say (or write), then don't.

Cheers! and kind regards,
Luc
