Renaming/sorting of portfolios/collections - PSU still hangs

Post by Phrans » 05 Feb 16 12:24

Hert reported that renaming of portfolios/collections is fixed in the latest build. (tested by other users in the beta).

With the new build, at my place, PSU still hangs when I rename a collection or when I manually sort collections.
Can some other users also perform a test and see if it hangs?
Because if so, I'll report that in Mantis.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

You could try to run this script:
http://scripts.idimager.com/cgi-bin/idi ... 05490134ef

You can remove the call to Catalog.BuildSearchdata because it will take long to run and I'm fairly positive that you already ran that.

I have run the script as you advised.
After over 16 hours, the program is still 'not responding', so I killed it and restarted.

The portfolio issue is still not solved.

Other possibilities/suggestions, please, because I'm stuck and getting tired of this.

Phrans,
My presence here is as a user. Some hold it against me when I reply as the developer here that that violates my own rules that this is a user-to-user forum. So I've decided to no longer contribute here at all. I'll keep evaluating the posts here to see if my absence helps the community to finally see this forum as a user-to-user forum. If not then I don't see value in the forum.

Anyway, back on topic. If you want to reach me then email me at support@idimager.com or join the subject on Mantis, where the beta testers of this issue also stated that it's not working now. http://mantis.idimager.com/view.php?id=2955

Hert,

Thanks & I certainly won't hold it against you. In fact I think it's great that the developer of the program brings in his knowledge when users among each other are simply not able to solve certain issues, so I hope you will keep on doing so. I cannot imagine any user having problems with that. Keep up the good work, it's very much appreciated.

Back on topic: so the issue is known and confirmed now. I hope a solution will be available soon, as the hanging of the software for something simple as sorting or renaming a collection is very annoying. It's something I (and I guess a lot of users) do all the time.
Kind regards, Met vriendelijke groet,

Hert, I would kindly ask you to reconsider your decision. Your presence on the forum has been beneficial and is appreciated. (Your answers to many questions I had during the trial period certainly influenced my decision to purchase Photo Supreme.)

I have always interpreted the "user-to-user" nature of the forum in a flexible (common sense) manner: forum members should not rely on receiving technical answers from developers. To me, it's absurd that such a reminder would preclude Hert from contributing on the forum, in whatever quality he chooses (user/developer/tester/company owner, etc).

I have just reviewed the forum rules and I could not find anything that leaves room for doubt. For example:
5. This is a User-to-User forum so users are your audience. Posting requests, suggestions, or bugs can be done in Mantis. Only then you can be sure that they are read by developers
I can't see how that sensible provision (guideline, advice) of directing requests, suggestions or bugs to developers via proper support channels (Mantis) could be reasonably interpreted as preventing developers to offer public answers, feedback, insights. IMHO, the user-to-user rule simply means that product or business insights are provided by Hert at his own discretion. With this in mind, I would take any post from Hert or his team at face value: commend it if it's helpful, ammend it if it's not.

In an informal community, I value common sense and working relationships above the literal interpretation of a certain syntagm or rule. (I have to say it: even religiously keeping 100% on topic is not essential, if that in turn detracts from the pleasure and motivation necessary for voluntary contributions.)

In conclusion, could we please welcome any helpful post (be it from Hert, Mike, Phrans or anyone else), rather than take it for granted, deride it or overread it? Could we all ensure this stays a human-to-human, pleasant and helpful forum?

Kind regards,
Vlad

P.S. I am sorry if I inadvertendly played any part in stirring a spurious side debate.

Phrans, did you edit the script to remove the following line (near the end of file), as advised by Hert?

Code: Select all

Catalog.BuildSearchData;
I once rebuilt the search data (without any subsequent effect) and that task took over 24 hours to complete (on a 7 year old laptop). It's possible that task was a showstopper in your case, especially if you ran it on older hardware.

Hert has completely misrepresented me in this thread and I have sent an email to him explaining my dissatisfaction with that and his decision to no longer participate in the forum. I have given him the permission to share that email with anyone whether publicly or privately.

Thank you for your kind words Vlad. You are spot on with how this forum should be.

Mike, I never intended to misinterpret you. And in fact I even publically agreed with you when you state that my presense here as a user is a violation of my own rules (even though I stated more than once that I'm here as a user). Several times you accused me of being deceptive for running the forum the way I want to run it. Why you think that is deceptive is beyond me. You also have problems with me for changing my name here to Hert instead of IDimager. Well, I think that posting as Hert is better because that I'm posting here on personal title and is in line with this being a user-to-user forum. And how I'm named at the forum is up to me.
I really don't understand where all your negativity comes from but if I became personally towards you anywhere then I hereby appologize for that as it's never been my intention to become personal. I still think I never did so.

In my book, both Hert (>20K posts; author of many scripts) and Mike (>4000 posts; author of one praised workbook), along with some other people, have made tremendous and longtime contributions to the community's shared knowledge. Once we acknowledge that, everything else (including natural differences amongst us in personality, background and communication style) is just secondary. There's no serious reason for anyone to stop contributing to the forum; on the contrary. Really.

(My 2 cents:
If Hert and Mike agreed, perhaps it would be better to simply delete all the off-(portfolio)-topic posts from this thread and simply move on with the Photo Supreme discussions. I wouldn't mind removing my off-topic posts, if that helps us all get back in the right mood.)

I did not edit the script, because I noticed (by viewing the script) that PSU would first 'ask' me to run the BuildSearchData part (OK-input required).
But it never got to that point in the script; I think I could wait another 24 hours and still see the 'not responding' message, because it just hangs.
Besides that, I just don't have that much time, because I get photo requests each and every day and I need PSU to answer them. It's my main program to work WITH, not ON.

Anyway, it would be more customer friendly if a progress bar would indicate how long a script/process lasts.

Phrans

This discussion reminds me of Sayre's law (attributed to a variety of people over the years):

Getting back to the topic of this thread:
being unsure if running the script after migration from IDI to PSU is necessary (see the rather confusing and contradictory statements here: http://forum.idimager.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=24094), I decided to do a back up of my current database and try out the script.
Definitely not a good idea!
It took about two hours to run. Prior to running the script, my database was 7.2 GB, afterwards 9.4 (after compacting 8.3 GB). I had hoped running the script help to perhaps optimize the size. Obviously not.
What was much worse: after running the script my database became extremely slow, rather unresponsive, not working well at all anymore. So, I decided to go back to my backup and everything is fine again. So, in my personal experience running that script after migration from IDI is definitely not a good idea...
