My thumbnail file is pretty big - 15GB. Now I know there are some other threads on this subject but I am wondering what all you PSUers out there have your thumbnail settings set to - size and quality.
Mine are currently 1280 / 95%.
My aim is to have a preview picture that is big enough to use for appraisal, rating, editing etc without resorting to the picture itself, so I can use PSU "offline" if travelling.
Related to this, can anyone tell me what operations cause PSU to fetch the actual image file? E.g. full screen viewing? editing? slideshow?

If your goal for the previews is to work with PSU while traveling then a lower quality would be sufficient. Maybe 85%?
When you open the image in the Viewer it will be read full size. So does full screen, and the editor. There's a setting for that (click lower Options button in the Viewer->Load full size images and by defailt it is ticked) so make sure you have it switched on. Also when in Travel Mode no full size images are loaded anywhere.

My values are as follows:
Preview Size 640
Preview Quality 95
Maybe I should also say that I never use Travel mode since all my images are on my D drive. And this D is an extra drive inside my portable Lenovo Thinkpad

Mine are all on a NAS drive accessed wirelessly. As well as when travelling my thoughts were for a big enough preview not to be always pulling big picture files over the wifi, though I may have simply transferred the problem by making the previews nearly as big as the pictures
