Cancel that - despite showing no progress and the database upgrade window staying greyed out and "Not Responding" - it all of a sudden cleared away and revealed my photo library!
I really don't understand that!
But it seems to be working now.

same here,
it takes a very long time for the database to get, uh, 'bijgewerkt' (updated), Windows indicates: 'reageert niet' (not responding).
silly me, back-up made quite long ago.
Lets see how it ends...
