How to select and import only rated images?

Post by InTheFlow » 13 Mar 13 23:25

When I go to the advanced options of the importer, select the location I'm looking to import from, a list of all the files in the folder are displayed.

If I right click on images there is a context menu that comes up that says find more with ratings of 0. Despite there being files in the folder which have been rated, '0' is the only option displayed. Neither the filter or search buttons work to trim down the list. It acts like PS doesn't recognize the XMP data before importing because, after it is, the rating shows up properly.

How can I import only images that have been rated? The reason is that I frequently use FastPictureViewer to cull images. Anything I rate, I want to keep and everything else should be discarded. It would be helpful to only import the pictures I want to keep.

Is there a way to do this?

The Importer is what brings the images (with their XMP) in PSU.

Btw, did you know that you can cull in the importer? Just double click on a thumb. Press space to mark the keepers

Hert - this does NOT answer the question1
IF PSU detects the XMP in the files the ratings from FastPicture Viewer one might assume that those ratings should show up in the importer and it then should be possible to filter the rated images thus only import those. Fact is: the ratings do NOT show up in PSU BEFORE the import - only afterwards! I can confirm this because I also use Fast Picture Viewer too to cull my images (it is light-years faster than culling in PSU's importer!). Fast Picture Viewer writes XMP, but PSU does detect it AFTER import the answer to the above question is: NO - PSU does not allow rapid culling of already rated images.
Frank

PS: for me that is actually not a big deal because I use Fast Picture Viewer to rapidly copy the 'keepers' from my camera's flashcard and then use the importer to get them into PSU (or actually IDI - like PSU, IDI also does not pick up the ratings before download/import, in that regard it works just like PSU ;-))

Frank, I don't see any value in seeing XMP in the Import Module. That will slow down the Import Module A LOT because typically people will import images from a memory card and those images don't have XMP at all, meaning XMP has to be created in memory only (as they might not be imported so may not be written to the database). And that to show ratings that one or two people need in the Import module... and the fact that even you, as the most critical and demanding user, don't need it says enough ;)

And XMP is NOT defected as you state it so nicely. It is not read in the Import module. That is what this topic is about and you make a big drama out of nothing. Don't draw conclusions too fast.

Culling is not about reading ratings Frank. Culling is a process of separating the good from the bad. It's a selection mechanism that is standard available in the Import Module.
Btw; FPV is for viewing images fast and it does a great job doing so. But being a File Viewer, I would personally never allow it to write metadata to my images

Thank you for answering my question. I now understand why it would be a bad idea to add that to the program. It is a non issue since Frank reminded me I can have FPV move my keep files to a different directory. Then I will use PS to import the files from the 'keep' folder. FPV enters XMP data in a standard way so I don't see any issue with allowing it to do so.

Personally, I love FPV for culling/viewing pictures and while you could do so with PS, I don't think it is as good for that purpose. Not a complaint nor an expectation for it to be changed, simply stating that for me (and apparently Frank too :D ), FPV is the way to go for that aspect of our workflow.

Thanks again.
