But didn't someone in this thread mention that you can edit the name by double clicking the caption?

Damage won't be done. The rename will fail. However I noticed that the caption below the thumb is then renamed to the new file, which doesn't reflect the name on disk (the rename failed after all). I fixed that now.

In addition I made a change so that the file name will be made unique if it already exists.

Is there any way to make this editable field under the thumbnail just the Title/Caption for the image? It currently seems to modify the file name as well as the Title but I don't ever want to modify the file name since the file names are customized during import.

You can't. The text under the thumbs is the file name and that is what is edited. If you don't want to edit file names then don't use it.

You can edit the title in the Info panel

Has the option to rename by doubleclicking on the caption been removed (v173)??
Is the only way to select "details" and then doubleclick on "Title" ??

On the Mac it's a double click. On windows you should press F2. This follows each platform's conventions better.

Hope that helps

Not quite, if you take Windows File Manager as the definitive example. Double click always opens. Click once to select; click (once) again in the selected name to edit-in-place.

Thanks Jim
I noticed I did a kind of slow doubleclick in WFM, like You said and not a normal doubleclick like I initially thought :)

True ... although one could also mention that this is configurable (at least on my Win7 system). You can alternatively configure that hovering will select while the first single click will open; I didn't see any way then to click or double click to get to a rename.
