Versioning Workflow Advice for Importer

Post by mphillips » 18 Jun 12 21:19

Hi

I now have a camera that has two memory cards. Onto the First Card I save the NEF files and on the second card a JPG file.

My question / advice that I need is how to automatically version the NEF and the JPG when downloading files. I download each card separately so have a first import of NEF files and then an import of JPG files.

Yes - when they are on the same card / location their is an Auto Version in the importer - but once the files are IN Supreme I can't "auto" version, can I ?

I guess a word around is to download the files into one consolidated temp directory and then re import them with the importer Versioning but that just sounds cumbersome ?

Any Ideas out there on the best way to achieve a single download per card and then version the jpgs to the NEF's without drag and dropping each one ?

Thanks

If you use two cards like you do then this would indeed be the way to cover that. Not very convenient, so I would store both the NEF and JPG on the same card, that would be most convenient.

Better yet, I wouldn't even record a JPG version because every NEF already has a full blown decent quality JPG embedded in it...so I don't see the need for recording a separate JPG when shooting NEF. This is just my personal point of view though...

Hert, Mike,
so I would store both the NEF and JPG on the same card
No I would never do that (for important stuff) - if one card fails you have at least the jpg's...
For important stuff I would rather store a backup of the RAW file on the second card!

That would be my advise too, because the embedded JPG get's all the processing that a seperat JPG would get - so, no difference at the end!

I understand your reasoning, and that's indeed a good reason to do that (can't the camera record two NEFs, both on a separate card??)... but if backup is your argument then downloading them in a version combo isn't a real issue as you'd typically not use the second card when no problems with the main card arise.
