10.6 vs 10.7 File locking

Post by pgerrish » 04 Mar 12 11:18

I use Snow Leopard 10.6 so have not tested IDI on Lion 10.7 but there was a significant change in file handling with 10.7 which has caused problems for some apps e.g. Microsoft Office. After a few weeks files are automatcially lablled read only and you are forced on editing by default to create a new version "File Save As". This is supposedly to reduce accidental deletion and also create versioning and link to iCloud. Does IDI Mac version take this into account as if you elect to update metadata on large number of jpg older than a few eeks (e.g. when it syncs ) the files will have been marked as read only by 10.7 and there seems a possibility of creating mutiple copies of the jpg which may be an issue if 1000s of large jpgs are being updated with Meta data over months.

This is the first time that hear of such a "feature". From how you describe it we could easily handle it. Do you have a pointer to more info about this subject?

Thank you

Hi Paul & Hert,

It's related to auto-save and versions features, new in Lion. Here's Apple's explanation, including how to turn it off (apparently, files are indeed locked after 2 weeks by default):

From this Apple source

Lock documents
You can lock a document at any time to prevent inadvertent changes. Two weeks after the last edit, Lion automatically locks the document for you. When you try to make a change, Lion alerts you and asks if you want to unlock or duplicate the file.

On reading Apple's discussion more closely, they seem to imply that apps have to be developed with auto save for this to work, so it may not apply to IDimager. Presumably, the documentation for the software development tools should have info about this that Hert can check.
