Is your backup as big as mine ?

Post by JoelleV » 24 Jun 20 21:04

Hi everybody
I'm using PS since a few months..
For now, I only create my catalog from my postprocessed jpg, and my catalog only contains 2497 pictures
But when I make a backup of this catalog, including database AND thumbnails, the final file is already heavy (2,20 Go )...
Is it normal ?
It seems very heavy, much more than a Lightroom backup...

I'll be very interrested by your feedbacks.

Have a nice evening !

A warm welcome to the forum.

First of all, compact the database to clean up unused space in the file.
Photo Supreme stores thumbs and previews of images. You can confIgnite the preview size and quality which will impact the size. Keep in mind that changes are effective from then on, meaning you’d have to rebuild thumbs and previews to see the effect.

Thanks for you answer & your welcome wishes :-)

I'll compact the database, good idea.
It reduced the weigth to 2,30 go.

The thumbs quality is for now settled on 70%..
If I also reduce it, how can I rebuild thumbs ??

Thanks by advance, and have a nice evening

To rebuild the thumbs you can select all thumbs and press Ctrl+Alt+T on Windows or press Cmd+Opt+T on macOS

PS. Reducing the size has a bigger impact on the size.
PS2. After rebuilding the thumbs you should Compact first to see the impact on the database size

Hello,

So, I tried the advices..
First step : Reducing the thumbnails to 70 (PS doesn't allow to go below ??)
Afterwards I saved the catalog : still 2,65 Go ...

Second stedp : compacting the catalog
Then another saving.. still 2,35 Go...

:-( ... it seems very heavy.... my catalog only contains, today, 4171 pictures...
Knowing that my LR catalog contains more than 200.000 pictures that I would like, little by little, add to PS catalog, it seems impossible... the catalog of PS will be desperately heavy...

Hoping to find a solution...

Have a great afternoon !

They can get quite big for my 286,256 images;
Image
Its on SSD of course, but still manageable.

OK... so I'll think about bying hard disks only for the catalog's backups.. ;-)

I'm a bit more scared about the place it will take on my main hard disk, for the catalog itself...
But... I'll see....
Maybe a solution : does PS works good if I place the main catalog on an external hard drive, the one I always connect to my PC when I'm working on pictures ?

Thanks for your help

... and I answer to my own question.
The main catalog runs without any problem when I deplace it on an external hard drive !!
It solves my problem !!!
Thanks everybody, and have a nice evening !!
